Fairmont State Women's Soccer Falls in MEC Quarterfinals to No. 6 Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State (7-10-2) women's soccer team fell to the Mountain East Conference South Division champions and nationally-ranked Charleston (16-0-3) by a score of 3-1 in the MEC Quarterfinals on Sunday (Nov. 5) at Welch Athletic Complex in Charleston, W.Va.

After a scoreless first half, UC pulled away in the second half with three-consecutive goals. Senior forward Kiera Kuzinski scored a goal for the Falcons in the 82nd minute on an assist by Tegan Wheeler. The Golden Eagles managed to drain the final minutes off the clock and advance to the conference semifinals.

Charleston posted 13 total shots and aimed six shots on goal in the match. FSU registered six shots and three shots on goal.

Olivia Johnston made one of her three saves in the eighth minute after denying Carina Widauer of an early scoring opportunity. In the 23rd minute, the Falcons drew a foul in the box that set up a penalty kick. UC 'keeper Jordan Maynard came up with a critical save and denied Ava Behr and the Falcons on the penalty kick opportunity. Both teams played well defensively in the first half and the game was scoreless after 45 minutes of play.

Fairmont State committed a foul inside the box in the 47th minute that resulted a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles. Lina Jaime tucked the penalty kick inside the top right corner of the net and put the home team in front. In the 55th minute, MEC Freshman of the Year Juliette Lucas threaded a pass to Widauer for a UC goal that extended the lead to 2-0. Jamie made it three unanswered goals for Charleston in the 69th minute on a breakaway goal on an assist from Widauer. Kylee Kosek recorded a shot on goal in the 81st minute that was saved by Maynard. The Falcons answered in the 82nd minute when Kuzinski fired a ball into the back of the net that was assisted by Wheeler. Kuzinski had another shot opportunity in the 86th minute that sailed just high of the crossbar. UC kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the final minutes and advanced to the MEC Semifinals.
