Brunny Nets Career-High 20 Points at Glenville State

Fairmont State fell at No. 5/12 Glenville State on Wednesday (Feb. 1).

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (14-8, 9-6 Mountain East Conference) dropped a road game to No. 5/12 Glenville State (19-2, 13-2 MEC) on Wednesday (Feb. 1) evening at the Waco Center in Glenville, W.Va.
 
Vienna, W.Va. sophomore Aaliyah Brunny led the Falcons with 20 points, which was her career high. Brunny made 9-of-12 shots from the field and converted a pair of three-point baskets to go along with four rebounds and one steal. Jertaya Hall put away eight shots and totaled 18 points. Leslie Huffman finished in double figures for the second consecutive game and tallied 16 points while Katy Darnell contributed 10 points and led the team with four assists and eight boards.
 
The Glenville State defense forced 32 Fairmont State turnovers. The Pioneers capitalized and scored 43 points off of turnovers. The Fighting Falcons shot 58.9% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc, while GSU averaged 50% from the field and 37.5% from long distance.
 
The Fighting Falcons trailed by three points with under two minutes to go in the first quarter when Hall knocked down a three-point shot with an assist from Darnell. After a GSU layup, the Falcons went up by four points following layups by Hall and Brunny. The Pioneers managed to add a basket before the buzzer to close the gap to two points at the end of the quarter. Madeline Huffman opened the second quarter with a three that put the Falcons ahead by five points. She added a pair of free throws that kept the Fairmont State lead at five points. GSU scored five unanswered points and tied the score at 36 with 8:35 remaining. With the score even at 38, the Falcons pulled ahead again after a 5-0 run which featured a pair of free throws by Alyssa DeAngelo, a Brunny layup and a Darnell free throw. The Pioneers took the lead after scoring eight unanswered points. GSU kept the momentum going by closing the second quarter on an 11-5 run and led by nine points at the break.
 
Out of the locker room, the Pioneers extended their lead to 15 points with 6:26 left in the third quarter. The Fighting Falcons trimmed the GSU lead to eight points with 1:41 remaining in the quarter when Brunny drained a three-point basket. The home team led 74-62 after three quarters of play. The Pioneers would maintain a double-digit lead for the entire duration of the fourth quarter. Leslie Huffman scored layups on back-to-back possessions to put Fairmont State within 10 points early in the fourth quarter. Glenville State's 15-4 run after Huffman's layups increased the Pioneer lead to 21 points with 5:28 to go. GSU held serve at home and won 95-80.
 
The Fairmont State women's basketball team will play in Fairmont on Saturday (Feb. 4) versus Concord at 2 p.m.
