Strong Second Quarter Leads Fairmont State Women’s Basketball to 96-74 Victory at Alderson Broaddus

The Falcons held the Battlers scoreless for over eight minutes in the second quarter.

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Fairmont State women's basketball team (18-8, 12-6 Mountain East Conference) outscored Alderson Broaddus (5-18, 4-14 MEC) 23-4 in the second quarter and knocked off the Battlers 96-74 on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at Rex Pyles Arena in Philippi, W.Va.
 
"We were very disciplined on the defensive end and really challenged them [Alderson Broaddus] in the second quarter," said Fairmont State Head Coach Stephanie Anderson. "It was great holding them to four points and I am proud of our kids' effort."
 
The tremendous defensive effort led to Fairmont State shooting 44.1% from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc. Alyssa DeAngelo led the scoring effort with 24 points and five three-pointers. She also poked three steals and dished out three assists to lead the Falcons. Katy Darnell (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Jertaya Hall (13 points, 10 rebounds) both earned double-doubles in the win. Darnell's double-double was her eighth of the season. Aaliyah Brunny (13 points) and Madeline Huffman (12 points) both reached double figures. Jalen Gibbs blocked a trio of shots and grabbed nine rebounds while Leslie Huffman scored eight points and pulled down four boards.
 
The Battlers jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the opening five minutes after going on a 6-0 scoring run. Fairmont State responded with its own 6-0 run after DeAngelo's first three-pointer of the game and made free throws by Leslie Huffman and Hall. Aaliyah Brunny knocked down her first three of the afternoon that put Fairmont State within one point. A driving layup by DeAngelo gave the Falcons their first lead of the game with 1:17 left in the first quarter. AB outscored the Falcons 5-2 in the last minute of the first and held a two-point lead after the first.
 
The Falcons brought the intensity on the defensive end of the floor in the second quarter and held the Battlers to just four points. Fairmont State held AB scoreless for over eight minutes in the second quarter and put up 18 unanswered points. Six Falcons (DeAngelo, Darnell, Gibbs, Hall, Leslie Huffman and Madeline Huffman) scored in the Fairmont State run. The Falcons led by 17 at the break.
 
Madeline Huffman and Jertaya Hall both rimmed home shots from beyond the arc on an 11-0 Fairmont State scoring run that extended the Falcons' lead to 24 points in the third quarter. Darnell and Brunny combined for a 7-2 run and the Falcons led by 25 points after three quarters of play. Fairmont State continued to build its lead in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter and the Falcons cruised to a 22-point win on the road.

The Fairmont State women's basketball team will take on Wheeling in Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 5:30 p.m.
