NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Fairmont State softball team wrapped up four games in South Carolina between Newberry and Lees-McRae this weekend (Feb. 18-19) in Newberry, S.C. with the Fighting Falcons going 0-4.

Game One – Newberry 9, Fairmont State 1
Judeah Morris drew a walk to lead off the game and stole second on the next batter.
Hannah Workman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Morris to third base. After Riggs walked and swiped second base,
Abbie Keilholz grounded out to the shortstop that drove home Morris.

The Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Falcons started a two-out rally in the second inning when
Alexa Andrews walked and
Mackenzie Maddy punched a hit through the left side. The Falcons left both runners on base. The Newberry offense produced six runs in the bottom half of the inning and the Wolves built an 8-1 cushion.

Workman started the third inning with a base hit, but the Falcons were unable to answer on offense. Newberry held Fairmont State scoreless in innings four and five.
Ally Maddy came on in relief and pitched 3.2 innings while not surrendering an earned run. The Wolves tacked on the final run in the sixth inning and won 9-1.

Game Two – Lees McRae 5, Fairmont State 1
Emily Riggs put Fairmont State in front with a home run down the left-field line in the first inning. The home run was Riggs' first of the season and her 12
th dinger in her Fairmont State career.
Myaih Cloud recorded her first collegiate hit in the second inning. The Falcons held a 1-0 lead after two.
The Bobcats plated two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth inning and led 3-1 after four innings of play. The Bobcats got two insurance runs in the top of the fifth and kept the Falcons off the board in the final three innings.

Emma Gates pitched 4.2 innings and punched out two batters. She allowed four earned runs in her outing.
Jordan Popowski completed two innings of work and did not allow a hit in the circle.

Game Three – Lees-McRae 3, Fairmont State 0
The Bobcats scored two runs in the second inning after back-to-back solo home runs. Lees-McRae retired the Falcons in order for six-straight innings. The Bobcats added a run in the fifth inning and led 3-0 heading into the seventh frame.
Ally Maddy pitched 1.2 innings in relief and did not surrender a hit. Maddy kept the Falcons within three runs heading into the final inning.

Workman and Riggs both smacked singles with one out and brought the tying run to the plate for the Falcons. The Bobcats recorded the final two outs and won the second meeting of the weekend, 3-0.

Game Four – Newberry 9, Fairmont State 1
Riggs and Keilholz drew walks with two outs in the first inning and set up a scoring opportunity early for the Falcons. The Wolves got the final out of the inning and held the Falcons scoreless in the first. Newberry generated a run in the top half of the inning and took an early 1-0 lead.

Mackenzie Maddy clubbed a double to center field and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Peyton Wetherholt. Newberry picked up two strikeouts and stranded Maddy on third. The Wolves added an additional run in the bottom of the second.
Bella Hess reached on an infield hit to lead off the third, but the Wolves retired the Falcons without giving up a run.

After the Wolves scored in the bottom of the third, Cloud hit her first collegiate home run over the center field wall that got the Falcons on the scoreboard. Newberry tacked on one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth and won 9-1 in six innings.

Hess finished 2-for-3 after racking up an infield hit in the fifth inning. Cloud and Maddy tallied extra-base hits for the Falcons.

The Falcons will be back at the diamond next weekend in Glenville, W.Va. for four games versus Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents. The Falcons will start the weekend on Saturday (Feb. 25) versus Slippery Rock with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
