Men’s Basketball Wins 88-70 Over Frostburg State on Senior Day

A trio of seniors were in double figures for the Falcons in their final game at Joe Retton Arena.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Isaiah Sanders scored 25 points in his final game at Joe Retton Arena and seniors Briggs Parris (16 points) and Fonz Hale (14 points) both reached double figures as the Fairmont State men's basketball team (22-6, 17-5 MEC) concluded the regular season with an 88-70 victory over Frostburg State (8-20, 4-18 MEC) on Saturday (Feb. 25) at Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont, W.Va.
 
Sanders swished four shots from deep and finished 8-of-13 from the field. He shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe and added two steals and two rebounds. Parris made 6-of-13 shots from the field and passed three assists to go along with his 16 points. Hale dished out four assists and recorded one steal. George Mangas produced 13 points. Senior Zyon Dobbs facilitated the offense and contributed a team-high five assists.
 
The Falcons sparked a 10-0 scoring run that included a three-pointer by Hale, a Tommy Williams layup and triple and a Mangas layup off of a Bobcat turnover that put the Falcons ahead 18-7 with 13:19 in the first. Fairmont State led by double digits for the first time following a Parris driving layup with 6:28 left in the first half. Sanders scored his fifth point of the game on a three-pointer from a Parris pass to pull the Falcons ahead by 13 and forced a Frostburg State timeout. The Bobcats cut the deficit down to seven points toward the end of the half. The Falcons closed the half on a 6-0 run from three-pointers by Williams and Mangas and held a 17-point cushion at the break.
 
Hale reached double figures with a three-ball that put Fairmont State up 20 points at the 17:41 mark. Sanders stepped in front of a Bobcat pass and hammered home a massive windmill dunk to put the Falcons ahead 53-31. Dobbs found Sanders for his 20th point of the game on a shot from beyond the arc that put the Falcons up 62-45 at the halfway point of the second half. Hale delivered an assist to Mangas who made a layup to put the Falcons back up by 22 points with 7:44 to go. The Bobcats were unable to trim the Fairmont State lead to less than 14 points down the stretch. Senior Trey Washenitz finished the Senior Day contest with a three-pointer with nine seconds to go and the Falcons completed the regular season with an 88-70 win.
 
The Falcons will now prepare for the MEC Tournament and earned the #2 seed in the bracket. Fairmont State will await the winner of the #7/#10 matchup between Glenville State and Wheeling. The Falcons will play the winner of that game on Friday (March 3) at noon inside WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.
