The Basics
The Fairmont State (22-6, 17-5 in Mountain East Conference play) men's basketball team will face Glenville State (17-12, 12-10) in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament on Friday, March 3 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va. at noon.

Scouting Glenville State
The Pioneers won the 7/10 matchup over Wheeling on Wednesday night, 96-84. This is the first meeting between Fairmont State and Glenville State in the MEC Tournament since the 2019-20 season. The Falcons defeated the Pioneers in the quarterfinal round, 77-70.

Leading the Pioneers offensive attack is All-MEC First Team selection Jordan Turbo Smith. Smith is averaging 18.6 points per game and netted 27 points in the play-in game versus Wheeling. Smith has picked off 59 steals, which leads GSU. Joining Smith on the all-conference awards list is All-MEC Second Team honoree Freddie Word. Word shot 47.5% from the field and averaged 15.5 points per contest to go along with a team-high 149 assists and 224 rebounds.

Jacquez Yow is the third GSU player to average double figures with 14.4 points per game. He and forward Harrison Eghan collected a combined 158 rebounds on the offensive glass.


Fifth-year head coach Justin Caldwell leads Glenville State men's basketball. Caldwell has guided GSU to the MEC Tournament in four-consecutive seasons. The Genville State alumni was an assistant at California (Pa.) and helped GSU win the 2015 MEC Tournament as an assistant coach. 


Season Series Versus Glenville State

The Pioneers took both matchups versus Fairmont State during the 2022-23 regular season. GSU was the only visiting team to win a game inside Joe Retton Arena this season after an 88-83 win on the Falcons' home floor on Dec. 10. On Feb.1, the Pioneers won an overtime thriller at the Waco Center, 85-84. Isaiah Sanders led all scorers with 23 points in the second meeting.

What's at Stake
The winner of Friday afternoon's matchup will advance to the MEC Semifinal Round, which will be played on Saturday (March 4). The winner between Fairmont State and Glenville State will meet the winner of the Charleston and Davis & Elkins matchup on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. from WesBanco Arena.
