Falcons Sweep Midweek Doubleheader at Frostburg State

Four Falcons finished the day with multiple hits.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Fairmont State (17-13, 7-3 in Mountain East Conference play) softball team swept a doubleheader versus MEC North preseason favorites Frostburg State (17-10) on Wednesday (March 29) from Bobcat Field in Frostburg, Md. The Falcons took game one by a score of 3-2 and outslugged the Bobcats in game two, 9-7.
 
Game One – Fairmont State 3, Frostburg State 2
The Falcons capitalized on three Frostburg State errors in the top of the first inning and scored three runs. Emily Riggs singled home Alexa Andrews and Hannah Workman scored on an error to put the Falcons ahead by two. Peyton Wetherholt scored Riggs later in the inning to give Fairmont State a 3-0 cushion.
 
Caitlyn Kassay sat the Bobcats down in order in the first inning on two fly outs and a ground out. She held Frostburg State scoreless through four innings. Katy Darnell singled in the second and fourth innings, but the game remained 3-0 into the middle of the fifth. Frostburg State scored a run in the fifth and sixth to pull within one run. Ally Maddy induced a double play and a ground out in the bottom of the sixth inning that kept Fairmont State in the lead. Frostburg State had the tying run on second base with one out in the seventh inning. Maddy collected two pop outs and secured a 3-2 win for the Falcons.
 
Darnell led the way at the plate with two hits in three at-bats. Workman, Riggs and Andrews each added a knock. Kassay struck out one and allowed two earned runs in five innings. Maddy picked up her first save of the season after pitching two clutch innings and allowing just one hit.
 
Game Two – Fairmont State 9, Frostburg State 7
The Falcons scored five unanswered runs to start game two. After an Andrews walk and a Workman base hit, Riggs clobbered a double to score both runners. Andrews plated Darnell and Riggs added another RBI that scored Andrews to extend the Falcons' lead to 4-0 in the second inning. Following a Wetherholt double to start the third, Abbie Keilholz singled through the left side to plate Wetherholt for Fairmont State's fifth run.
 
The Bobcats responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Riggs racked up her fourth RBI with a base hit to left field that scored Andrews in the fourth inning. Frostburg State scored one in the fourth and the Falcons held a three-run lead after four.
 
With two outs in the fifth, Andrews delivered a huge hit that scored Keilholz and Mackenzie Maddy to push the Fairmont State lead back to five. Frostburg State stormed back and trimmed the Fairmont State lead to one in the bottom half of the inning. Shelby Reed recorded two big outs coming out of the bullpen to preserve the lead for Fairmont State. The Falcons tacked on a run in the sixth from a Frostburg State error.  The Bobcats brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings. Reed closed out the game and earned her first save of the season and the Falcons completed the sweep with a 9-7 game two win.
 
Riggs and Andrews combined for seven RBIs and Keilholz added one. Workman collected four hits in five at-bats and Riggs had three. Andrews reached base four times with two hits and two walks. In the circle, Emma Gates earned her eighth win of the season after completing four innings. Reed punched out one hitter and threw 2.2 innings in her first save of the season.
 
Up Next
The Fairmont State softball team is scheduled to return to the diamond on Saturday (April 1) for a doubleheader at Wheeling.
