Clutch Hitting, Reed's Shutout Featured in Doubleheader Sweep Over Concord

The Falcons swept Concord at Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday afternoon.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State (24-18, 14-8 in Mountain East Conference Play) swept a doubleheader versus Concord (15-28, 6-16) on Friday (April 14) at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont.

Game One – Fairmont State 9, Concord 5
The Falcons stole a season-high nine bases in the game one win. After the Mountain Lions hung four runs in the top of the first inning, the Falcons roared back to take the lead after scoring five in the bottom of the first. Katy Darnell started the rally with a leadoff single and Hannah Workman placed a bunt single to set the table for the Falcons. With runners on the corners, Workman stole second base and Myaih Cloud drew a walk to load the bases. Courtney Moyer drove in a run on a walk and got the Falcons on the scoreboard. Abbie Keilholz cleared the bases and tied the game on a base hit. Mackenzie Maddy put the Falcons in the lead on a double down the left field line and Fairmont State capped off an eventful first inning by pulling into the lead.

CU evened the game at five with a sac fly in the third. Fairmont State regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a Mountain Lions' throwing error and a Peyton Wetherholt RBI knock. The home team added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on a pair of Concord errors.

After surrendering four runs in the first. Caitlin Kassay settled in and allowed just one run the rest of the way. She picked up her fifth win of the season and struck out five batters in her outing.

Alexa Andrews went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish and scored a run. Darnell chipped in a trio of hits and scored two while Maddy finished with two hits in two at bats. Six Falcons had a stolen base and Andrews and Maddy swiped two bags apiece.

Game Two – Fairmont State 3, Concord 0
Concord began the game with a runner on third and one out. The Mountain Lions attempted to complete a sacrifice fly but the runner left early from third base and it resulted in an inning-ending double play. With two outs in the third, Elizabeth Waszkiewicz singled down the right field line and scored Jaylin McGill. Workman singled to short and Waszkiewicz crossed the plate for the team's second run of the game. The Falcons followed up with a run in the fourth inning after Maddy doubled down the right field line to score Moyer and Fairmont State went ahead 3-0.

That was all the run support Shelby Reed needed. The Mountain Lions had no answer for Reed and she kept the CU hitters guessing all day long. The senior from Conway, Ark. tossed her third complete game of the season and shutout the Mountain Lions while throwing a pair of strikeouts and allowing four base hits.
