CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Fairmont State softball team (31-21, 21-11 in Mountain East Conference play) dropped the final two regular season games to Charleston (32-8, 25-5 MEC) on Saturday (April 29) at UC Softball Field.

Game One – Charleston 6, Fairmont State 1
Emily Riggs ripped a double to right center field with two outs in the top of the first inning but the Falcons were unable to score her. UC hit a two-run home run in the first inning and recorded a two-RBI base hit to right field in the third and led 4-0 after three innings. The Golden Eagles added one more run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Katy Darnell singled to left field with two outs in the fifth inning and scored
Judeah Morris to get the Falcons on the scoreboard. UC answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run and reclaimed a five-run cushion. The Golden Eagles held the Falcons scoreless in the final two innings.

Darnell had two of the three Fairmont State hits in game one. Riggs reached base all three times with a double and two walks.
Caitlyn Kassay struck out four batters and
Ally Maddy allowed two runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Game Two – Charleston 7, Fairmont State 0
Hannah Workman poked a single through the left side in the first inning and was thrown out attempting to steal second base with Riggs up. Riggs walked with two outs but the Falcons were held scoreless in the first.
Emma Gates threw a 1-2-3 first inning. Charleston broke through with two runs in the second inning. The Falcons were sat down in order in innings 3-5 and Charleston remained in the lead, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles added two in the fifth and three in the sixth to increase the lead to seven runs. The Falcons were held to one hit in the second game and only one baserunner in the final six innings.

The Falcons won the 2023 MEC North Division title after Frostburg State fell to West Virginia State. With the win, the Falcons will play in the MEC Tournament as the North Division No. 1 seed and will play the No. 4 seed in the south on Friday (May 5) at 2:30 p.m. on Field 3 at the Botetourt Sports Complex in Troutville, Va.
