Falcons Drop Doubleheader at Alderson Broaddus

Hannah Workman totaled five hits on the day at Philippi.

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Fairmont State (21-17, 11-7 in Mountain East Conference play) softball team dropped a MEC North doubleheader at Alderson Broaddus (11-25, 6-12) on Saturday (April 8) at North Philippi City Park.
 
Game One – Alderson Broaddus 4, Fairmont State 1 (9 inn.)
Hannah Workman walked with one out and Emily Riggs smacked a double and the Falcons had a pair of runners in scoring position early. Peyton Wetherholt grounded out to short and scored Workman to put the Falcons in the lead. AB responded with a run in the bottom of the first and tied the game at one.

A set of zeros crept across the scoreboard as no team scored in innings two and three. Fairmont State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 4th. AB managed to hold the Falcons scoreless and the game remained tied. Fairmont State had another scoring opportunity in the top of the 5th and had the bases full with two outs. Again, the Battlers recorded the final out before the Falcons could score a run. FSU had two runners on in scoring position in the seventh with another opportunity to take a lead. AB kept Fairmont State off the scoreboard and the game moved to extra innings.
 
The Falcons and Battlers both went down in order in the eighth inning. Katy Darnell singled with two outs in the ninth inning but was stranded at first base. AB doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. With one out and two runners on, the Battlers hit a home run and won game one in extras.
 
Darnell and Workman both finished with two hits apiece. Riggs had the lone extra-base hit and Courtney Moyer added one hit. Caitlyn Kassay threw 8.1 innings and struck out eight in her outing. She allowed just one run in over eight innings pitched before the AB home run in the ninth.
 
Game Two – Alderson Broaddus 7, Fairmont State 6
Darnell led off the game with a double to left. Workman singled and plated Darnell to put the Falcons on top, 1-0. AB induced three outs from the Falcons and held Fairmont State to one run in the first. The Battlers snapped back with two runs and grabbed a one-run lead after one inning of play. The Battlers hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second and extended the lead to two.
 
The Falcons cut the deficeit to one run in the fifth inning after Workman drove in her second run of the day on a base hit that scored Elizabeth Waszkiewicz. AB posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and led by four after five innings of play. An Alexa Andrews double scored Moyer to put the AB lead within three runs heading into the seventh inning. With one out, Darnell and Workman both singled and the tying run was brought to the plate. Myaih Cloud singled and drove in Darnell to put the Falcons within two. Abbie Keilholz tied the game with a two-RBI single. The Battlers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an error and won game two, 7-6.
 
Workman led the way on offense with three hits and drove in two runs. Darnell and Cloud both finished with a pair of hits. Darnell totaled a double and a stolen base. In the circle, Emma Gates threw 4.0 innings and surrendered six runs on seven hits in the no-decision.

The Falcons will return back to Duvall-Rosier Field for a doubleheader versus Frostburg State on Wednesday (April 12) at 2 p.m.
