FSU Secures Upset Victory Against Concord

Whiteside Records 26 points, Jolinder Has 20

FAIRMONT, W. VA. – The Falcons (8-3, 3-3 Mountain East Conference play) were able to notch their third conference win against Concord University (7-2, 3-2) on Friday afternoon with a score line of 88-72 in Joe Retton Arena. The Mountain Lions recently received votes towards the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) top 25 rankings on Dec. 31.
 
Cameron Whiteside led all scorers with 26 points to go along with seven boards and two steals. David Jolinder managed 20 of his own points and five rebounds. Zyon Dobbs had 15, and Tommy Williams claimed 14, shooting 50% from behind the arc. Seth Younkin took charge of the paint with 15 rebounds and five points.
 
Williams drained two threes to clinch an early lead for Fairmont State. Jolinder then had five points including a jumper and a triple. Whiteside had a jumper, making the score 13-6 with 16:05 to play in the first half. Tyheil Peterson helped his team stay in the lead with jumper and a shot from beyond the arc. Zyon Dobbs notched a pair of free throws, which was followed up by a Whiteside three to adjust the score to 25-22 with under 10 minutes to go until halftime. Back-to-back layups by Joinder and then Whiteside pushed for a two-point lead in favor of the Falcons. Jolinder recording six points on his own for the Falcons, but his side trailed by one at the half, 40-41.
 
Younkin had a layup to give Fairmont State the lead back after halftime. Dobbs and Whiteside combined for six consecutive buckets for their side, where they would edge the Mountain Lions 54-50. A three from Williams with 12:22 left in the contest gave FSU a 10-point advantage. Dobbs and Jolinder both managed a three, then Younkin brought the arena to life with a dunk to continue their success offensively in the second half. Peterson drained a three and then Whiteside grabbed another layup for FSU with 5:35 to play. A jumper from Dobbs put the Flacons up by 15 late in the contest. Whiteside managed the final bucket of the game to help his side pull off the upset victory against Concord 88-72.
 
Next Up
FSU will play Wheeling University in their MEC competition slate this upcoming Wednesday (Jan. 10). Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
