Thomas Scores Hat Trick in Dominate Win Over West Liberty

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team hosted West Liberty University in a Mountain East Conference matchup. Behind three goals from Serenity Thomas, the Falcons defeated the Hilltoppers, 4-1.

From the opening kick, Fairmont State showed dominance with ball possession on its half of the field. The Falcons started to take numerous shots in the first 20-plus minutes but they either just missed the net or were stopped by the West Liberty goalie. In the 30th minute, Ashley Rainho dribbled the ball into the box, drawing a defender along with the keeper. At the last moment, Rainho passed the ball directly to Serenity Thomas, who easily placed the ball into the back of the net for the opening goal.

Over the final 15 minutes of the first half, Fairmont State continued to apply offensive pressure but were unable to add to the lead. At the half, the Falcons held the one-goal lead.

The Falcons wasted little time in the second half and continued their dominance in the offensive end. In the 51st minute, Braylyn Sparks led Arrington Sparks down the far sideline to an open area. Arrington Sparks placed the to the front of the goal as Thomas buried the pass for her second goal of the game.

Keeping up the offensive zone time paid off for Fairmont State in the 66th minute as Lauren Dye lifted a ball over top of the Hilltoppers back line leading Thomas to the goal. Thomas made a touch to give herself some room and complete the hat trick to hand FSU a 3-0 lead. Over 10 minutes later, the Falcons earned a corner kick as Braylyn Sparks was tasked with starting the set piece. Sparks placed the ball right in the box as Filippa Stalhammar timed her run and headed the ball into the bottom right of the goal for the final FSU goal of the night.

West Liberty got on the board in the 78th minute but the margin as well as Fairmont State's play was too much as the home side won by the three-goal margin.
