Falcons Advance to the MEC Semifinals with Two 2nd Half Goals

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State Univesity women's soccer team welcomed Concord University in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Thanks to second half goals, the Falcons defeated the Mountain Lions, 2-1.

Start of the first half, Fairmont State applied early pressure with three shots on goal but the Concord University goalkeeper made the saves. Concord started to find its footing and started to get some quality offensive zone time.

In the 24th minute, the Mountain Lions had a shot on goal but Olivia Johnston was able to make the save. However, the ball just rolled away from her right to an opposing player who was able to score the first goal of the afternoon.

The two sides went back-and-forth and took a couple more shots but each one was off target. As the half came to an end, Concord led 1-0.

Just like the first half, the Falcons had a strong start with three shots but none of them found the back of the net. In the 57th minute of play, the Mountain lions played a ball back to their goalie. As the goalie played the ball, Braylyn Sparks closed and forced a bad touch. Sparks was able to corral the ball and score off her left foot to even the game at one.

Having the momentum of just scoring a goal, Fairmont State grew the offensive zone time and added three more shots on goal but each one was saved. With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, the home side were awarded a free kick after a foul. Tricia Lemasters took the kick and curved the ball into the box as Filippa Stalhammar timed her jump perfectly and headed home the ball to the top right corner of the goal.

Leading 2-1, the Falcons were able to lockdown the Mountain Lions as the ball rarely got within 30 yards of the goal. As time expired, Fairmont State punched its ticket to the MEC Semifinals with the one-goal victory.

Fairmont State will hit the road and face the number one seed of the south division, University of Charleston on Wednesday, November 13. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
