Women's Soccer Falls in MEC Semifinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's battled the number-one seed of the south division, the University of Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. After being even at the half, the Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles, 4-1.

The two squads were pacing each other for the first third of the half. In the 16th minute, Fairmont State broke the scoreless tie as Serenity Thomas scored on a pass from Ashley Rainho. The Falcons kept the offensive pressure with a couple more shots but none of them found the back of the net.

Charleston's first shot on target came in the 37th minute and made it count as the game was tied at one. As neither side registered a shot on goal in the final eight minutes, the score was tied at the half.

In the second half, Fairmont State was able to place two more shots within the goal opening but the Golden Eagles made the stops. Continuing its efficient shooting, Charleston took the lead in the 56th.

With momentum on the home side, the Golden Eagles added two more goals to go in front, 4-1. The Falcons took a flurry of shots in the final nine minutes but were unable to add to their total as they fell by the three-goal margin.

Fairmont State finishes the season with a 12-7-1 overall record while going 9-5 in conference play.
