FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Fairmont State University football team hit the road for the final game of the season against Frostburg State University. The Falcons outscored the Bobcats 10-0 in the fourth quarter as
Emmanuel Richardson nailed a 28-yard field goal for the 31-28 win.
The win over Frostburg State was the first in program history as Fairmont State dropped the past four meetings. Additionally, the win gave head coach
Luke Barker his seventh on the year which set a program record for most wins by a coach in their first season with the Falcons.
Fairmont State received the opening kick and started to move the ball into Frostburg State territory as two-straight runs by
Leonard Farrow. With a 4th-and-5 at the hosts 40,
Nino Marzullo completed a pass to
Jermaine Bradford to keep the drive alive. Unfortunately, the drive ended there as the Falcons turned the ball over on downs.
Starting at its own 32, Frostburg State quickly picked up nine yards on first down. The Falcons defense held the Bobcats right there and forced a turnover on downs. On the positive side of the field, Farrow jump started the drive with a 21-yard gain on the ground. Fairmont State remained on the ground as Farrow's number was called three more times to set up 1st-and-Goal at the Bobcat six. Marzullo connected with
Donovan Washington on a short pass before the quarterback kept the ball and pushed his way in for the touchdown. The point after was good as the Falcons held the early 7-0 lead.Â
The Bobcats wasted little time on their next drive as a run for 10 yards followed by a 45-yard touchdown pass evened the score at seven with 5:22 left in the first.Â
Fairmont State was unable to move the ball on its next drive as the team went three-and-out. Frostburg State started its next drive on the Frostburg 30 and continued to move the ball down the field. The Bobcats reached Fairmont's side of the field as the second quarter came to an end. On third down,
Gavin Smith broke up a pass over the middle before
Howard Williams replicated the task to force another turnover on downs.
Both teams punted the ball on their next drives as the Falcons took over with 13:40 to go in the half at their own 41. Going right back to the ground, Farrow picked up 30 yards on four runs. Marzullo connected with Bradford once more along with a face mask penalty as Fairmont State was positioned at nine with a 1st-and-Goal.
LeJay Hatcher was handed the ball three-consecutive times as he found pay dirt to give the Falcons a 14-7 edge.Â
Carrying momentum from the touchdown, the Falcons' defense forced Frostburg State to punt the ball back to Fairmont State. Staying on the ground, Farrow and Hatcher moved the ball near midfield as the two-minute timeout was called. A defensive pass interference advanced the ball to the Bobcats 40 before Farrow broke free for a 25-yard rush. The Falcons kept handing the ball to Farrow on several downs before he broke the goal line to extend the lead to 14 (21-7).
Frostburg State had a strong return of 29 yards to set the hosts at the Fairmont State 37 with 22 seconds left in the half. After penalties by both teams and two incomplete passes, the Bobcats had one last shot to score in the half. Frostburg State made the most of the final five seconds and scored on a 32-yard pass to make it a seven-point (21-14) game going into the half.
To start the second half, the Bobcats received the kickoff and on the first play of scrimmage, gained 15 yards on the ground. Stops on consecutive downs, the Bobcats faced a 3rd-and-9 and kept the drive going after a 45-yard pass to the Fairmont State nine. Just two plays later, the Bobcats were into the endzone and tied the game at 21.
Fairmont State struggled to get anything going and on 3rd-and-10, Marzullo dropped back but was intercepted as the Bobcats took over at their own 20. The hosts found their rhythm and moved the ball over 80 yards in eight plays to take a 28-21 lead with 5:53 left in the third quarter.
The Falcons continued to struggle on offense and were forced to punt the ball back. Frostburg State started to move the ball on its next drive but near midfield,
Nasir Enoch intercepted a pass over the middle and returned it 18 yards to the Bobcat 20.Â
Going back to the ground, Hatcher quickly moved the ball near the goal line. On the first play in the fourth quarter, Marzullo found
Gage Michael over the middle for a four-yard score. Following
Emmanuel Richardson's PAT, the score was tied once again, 28-28, with 14:54 to go in regulation.Â
The Bobcats copied the Falcons game plan and kept the ball on the ground. On four of its five plays, Frostburg State ran the ball for 36 yards. The hosts attempted a 40-yard field goal but the kick missed.
Both teams were unable to sustain drives as they either punted the ball or turned it over on downs. Fairmont State took over with 3:31 left in regulation at the 50-yard line as Hatcher went to work and picked up 35 yards on four-straight runs. After a couple short gains, the Falcons trotted out the kicking unit with just three seconds left on the clock. Richardson attempted the 28-yard field goal and put it right down the middle for the walk-off win.
