FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team welcomed California University of Pennsylvania to open the home portion of the schedule. The Falcons opened with a 55-23 halftime lead and cruised to an 80-59 victory.
Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 18 points.
Madeline Huffman added 14 points and five assists while
Jalen Gibbs scored 12 while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking five shots.Â
Madeline Huffman got things going early for Fairmont State by hitting a three and then laying in a fast break pass from her sister,
Leslie Huffman. California scored the next three points but the Falcons went back to work as
Alyssa DeAngelo accounted for four of the next six points. The run eventually grew to a 13-1 advantage as FSU led 18-4 with 4:38 left in the first quarter. The two teams matched each other for the remainder of the period as the Falcons led by 16 (27-11).
Fairmont State did not slow down as it opened the five-plus minutes with a 17-3 run to hold a 44-14 advantage with 4:35 left in the half. The Falcons were able to maintain the lead and a late layup by
Gabby Reep gave the hosts a 32-point lead (55-23) at the half.
In the third quarter, the Vulcans were able to narrow the gap to 26 (59-33) but Fairmont State slowed the run and reopened it to 31 with 40 seconds left in the third. California was able to make a three before the end of the period as FSU led 68-40 going to the fourth.
The Vulcans continued to slowly chip away at the difference but in the end, the Falcons were able to cruise to the 21-point victory.Â
Fairmont State (3-1) remains at home on Wednesday, November 20 to face Malone University. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
