Men's Basketball Out Rebounds D&E in Home Victory

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University men's basketball team looked to continue its strong start to the season against Davis & Elkins College. The Falcons out rebounded the Senators en route to a 90-73 victory.

The Falcons were strong on the glass with 37 rebounds compared to 24 for the Senators. Leading the way for the team was Taj Thweatt as he scored 21 points with 10 boards. Rudy Fitzgibbons and Andre Harris added 20 points while Harris also corralled eight rebounds.

Fairmont State came out the gate strong by scoring the opening 11 points with two three-point makes from Rudy Fitzgibbons. Davis & Elkins got on the board at the 15:20-mark of the first but a layup by Andre Harris followed by another three from Fitzgibbons pushed the Falcon lead out to 16 (18-2).

The Senators were able to find their footing but only narrowed the margin to seven (29-22) with 5:36 left. The Falcons used a 10-2 run to reopen a double-digit lead (39-24) with five of those points coming from Harris. By the time the horn sounded, FSU led 43-29 going to the locker room.

In the second half, the action quickly picked up as the two sides battled back-and-forth. Midway through the half, Fairmont State used another 10-2 run to go ahead by 20 (69-49) as David Jolinder and Tyheil Peterson both nailed three pointers.

Davis & Elkins tried to cut into the lead but the Falcons stayed true and a breakaway alley-oop from Fitzgibbons to Thweatt put a stamp on the game. Fairmont State was able to coast over the final five minutes to secure the 17-point victory.

The Falcons went 33-61 (54.1%) from the field and hit 11 of their three-point attempts. The team also scored 42 of their points in the paint with 16 second chance points on the night.

Fairmont State (5-0, 2-0) ventures south to face the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State on Wednesday, December 4. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
