Strong Defense Leads to Dominate Win for Women's Basketball

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team hosted Davis & Elkins College in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Falcons forced 29 turnovers and scored 36 points off them on the way to a 75-42 win.

Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 15 points. Leslie Huffman (14), Madeline Huffman (12), and Jalen Gibbs (11) finished with double-digit point totals. The Falcons also won the battle on the boards with 48 rebounds compared to 40 for the Senators.

Fairmont State started off quickly with the first seven points as Alyssa DeAngelo accounted for five of them. Davis & Elkins scored the next five points but the Falcons opened its lead with a 9-0 run to lead 16-5 with 4:25 left in the first. Over the final four minutes, the teams traded points as FSU held a 21-10 lead going to the second. 

In the second period, the Senators tried to slow down the hosts but with an 11-2 stretch, Fairmont State opened its lead to 18 (32-14). Over those four minutes, Leslie Huffman scored eight of the points going 2-2 from behind the arc. D&E matched the Falcons for most of the period but FSU notched the final four points to lead 42-11 going to half.

The two sides exchanged baskets as the pace quickened in the second half. Just like the first two quarters, the Falcons went on a run that spanned nearly four minutes to go ahead by 37 (62-25). FSU held the 30-plus point margin going to the final 10 minutes of regulation, 63-27.

Davis & Elkins were able to outscore the Falcons in the fourth (15-12) but the deficit was too great as the home side were able to win comfortably inside of Joe Retton Arena.

Fairmont State (5-2, 1-1) hits the road on Wednesday, December 4 to battle West Virginia State University. The start of the game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
