FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State University men's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season at the Joe Retton Classic. The Falcons took down the Bloomsburg Huskies, 100-84.
The Falcons had nine different scores with
David Jolinder and
Andre Harris leading the way with 19 points as Harris completed the double-double with 11 rebounds. Off the bench,
Tyheil Peterson added 18 points.
Bloomsburg opened the game with a mid-range jumper before
David Jolinder scored five-straight points to give Fairmont State the lead. The two sides went back-and-forth before the Huskies hit consecutive threes to lead 11-9.
The Falcons came back with six-straight points with four coming off the hand of
Taj Thweatt. FSU maintained the lead and following a Peterson three, expanded it to eight (25-17). The Huskies mounted a comeback with a 16-4 run to lead 33-29 with 6:20 left in the first half.
Looking to regain the lead, Thweatt got things going with an emphatic dunk. As the arena came to life,
Callum Crossman forced a turnover and on the fastbreak, Peterson nailed another three for the 34-33 lead. The seesaw affair continued for the remainder of the half as Harris laid in the final basket as the Falcons led 49-48 going into the locker room.
The two sides continued to match the other in the second half for the first nine minutes. As the clock read 10:52, the score was locked at 69 before Fairmont State rattled off seven-straight with a three by
Rudy Fitzgibbons to cap it off. Bloomsburg hung around stayed within just a couple of baskets.
After the Huskies made it a five-point (84-79) with 4:42 to go, the Falcons took control of the game and scored 13 unanswered points as a steal and breakaway dunk by Jolinder sealed the deal. FSU cruised over the final minute for the 16-point win.
Fairmont State (1-0) wraps up the Joe Retton Classic on Saturday, November 9 against Edinboro University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
