FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University women's basketball team looked to snap its two-game skid against Glenville State University. After a tightly contested first period, the Falcons went on to win with ease, 82-51.
The opening period of the game started in a furry with both teams answering one another. Fairmont State (16-4, 10-3) opened a four-point advantage but Glenville State (14-6, 8-5) hung in there and even led 13-12 with 5:25 left in the first.
However, the Falcons took control scoring 11-straight with four points from
Jalen Gibbs and
Leslie Huffman. Going to the second, FSU led 23-13.
In the second, Fairmont State kept its momentum going. Even though the Pioneers made it 28-19 with 6:27 on the clock, the home side showed its dominance. The Falcons outscored the visitors 17-1 to hold a 45-20 advantage at the half.
A high-scoring period broke out in the third with each team seemingly to have an answer for the other. Glenville State tried to narrow the deficit but Fairmont State won the period, 25-18, for a 70-38 lead going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The home side went to the bench in the fourth as the Pioneers scored 13 points to the Falcons 12 en route to the 31-point win.Â
Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 24 points while
Katy Darnell recorded another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Gibbs added 16 points as she grabbed eight boards.
Fairmont State hosts the University of Charleston on Wednesday, February 7. Schedule start is 5:30 p.m.
