MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Fairmont State University softball team concluded its weekend trip to North Carolina against Chowan University. The Falcons offense showed up in droves, winning 16-10 and 18-0.
Game 1: Fairmont State 16, Chowan 10 (8 Inn.)
In the opening frame,
Bella Hess reached on an error before
Emily Riggs launched a two-run homer to left field. Fairmont State added to its lead in the top of the second with another home run, this time off the bat of
Isabella Yelle.
Chowan got on the board in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game. An inning later, the hosts evened the game with a two-run single.
The Hawks claimed the lead in the fourth as they scored four runs on two hits and walks. Trailing 7-3, it took the Falcons until the top of the sixth to narrow the margin.
Sydney Emanuel singled up the middle to plate
Courtney Moyer and Riggs to make is a 7-5 contest. After holding the hosts scoreless, FSU looked to extend the game, if not win it.
Riggs hit her second two-run home run of the game to even it at seven. With the bases loaded and two outs, Emanuel singled to clear the bases and hand the Falcons a 10-7 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.
Unfortunately, Chowan did not go down easily. Following a lead off pop-out, the Hawks hit a solo home run to left center. Two at-bats later, the home side evened the game with one swing. Going to extra innings, the game was tied at 10.
Fairmont State capitalized on starting the inning with a runner on second.
Alexa Andrews drove in a run before
Mattea Buchta scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The visitors were not done as Moyer tripled to right center to make it a 15-10 game.
Kamilla Slayton drove in the final run for the Falcons.
With one out in the bottom half, Chowan singled to place runners on the corners. The Falcons forced a line out and a ground ball for the six-run win.
Game 2: Fairmont State 18, Chowan 0 (5 Inn.)
Fairmont State kept the momentum going as Riggs hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
Hannah Workman.Â
Leading 1-0, the Falcons' offense exploded for 13 runs on eight hits and two errors. The inning was capped off by a two-run home run by
Jaylin McGill to left center.
Ahead 14-0, the visitors added a run in the third and fourth before a two-run homer byÂ
Alyssa McCormick to close out the scoring.Â
Meanwhile
Delaney Haller and McCormick combined for the complete game shutout. Haller was credited with the win, throwing 2.1 innings and just three hits. McCormick went 2.2, allowing just one hit while striking out six.
Fairmont State (3-1) heads to Greeneville, Tennessee for the Tusculum Round Robin on Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11. The Falcons will face Hillsdale College at 10:00 a.m.
