NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Fairmont State University softball opened its stint in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina over the next three days. The Falcons fell in game one to Jefferson University, 4-1, before falling to Mansfield University, 5-4.
Game 1: Jefferson 4, Fairmont State 1
In the first inning, neither team scored a run before Jefferson got on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single to left field. As Fairmont State went down in order, the Rams added two runs on three hits in third to lead 3-0.
The Falcons got on the board in the bottom half of the inning as
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz scored on a ground ball by
Jordan Popowski. Jefferson quickly answered in the fourth with an RBI single to right field.Â
Fairmont State struggled to get a runner past second base until the bottom of the seventh. After two outs, Waszkiewicz tripled to left center but she was stranded there as the team fell by the three-run difference.
Game 2: Mansfield 5, Fairmont State 4 (8 Inn.)
The Falcons got off to a better start in their second game of the day as Payton Wetherholt drove in
Hannah Workman to hand the team a 1-0 lead. Mansfield looked to tie the game in the second but
Delaney Haller struck out the batter to end the threat.
The Mounties were looking to score in the third and was successful as it evened the game at one. However, Fairmont State went back in front as
Emily Riggs singled up the middle to bring home
Bella Hess to lead 2-1.
Mansfield wasted little time and responded in the fourth as it scored three runs on two hits and an error to go ahead 4-2. It remained a two-run game until the bottom of the fifth when Riggs once again drove in Hess.Â
The Falcons kept its momentum going in the sixth as
Isabella Yelle lift a sacrifice fly to centerfield as
Courtney Moyer tagged up and evened the game at four. In the seventh, both teams left a runner in scoring position as the game ventured to extra innings.Â
In extra innings, each team starts with a runner on second base as the Mounties used two hits to break the tie and go ahead, 5-4. Fairmont State looked to respond as Moyer advanced to third as
Kamilla Slayton grounded out. Waszkiewicz was then hit by a pitch and stole second. Unfortunately, the chance ended there as the Falcons were not able to extend the game.
Fairmont State (8-4) will face Haskell Indian Nations University on Tuesday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. Game two will take place at 1:00 p.m. against Gwynedd Mercy University.
