Fairmont State's Historic Season Ends in Regional Semifinal

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University women's basketball team faced Fayetteville State University in the NCAA DII Women's Basketball Atlantic Regional Semifinal. A tough night shooting plagued the Falcons as they fell to the Broncos, 70-62.

"Hats off to Fayetteville State, they gave us a fight for 40 minutes tonight," head coach Stephanie Anderson said. "I am proud of our team and that locker room. They have accomplished a lot of firsts this year and it was a tremendous season and we played with a lot of heart and never lost out character."

In the first period, both teams were tense as they went back-and-forth. With it being a one-point game, 7-6, Fairmont State scored five-straight points to lead 12-6 with 4:17 to go. Fayetteville State narrowed the margin to four (15-11) before the Falcons scored the final five points to lead 20-11 going to the second.

Both sides matched each other for the first five minutes of the second and after a Leslie Huffman three, the home team led 30-22 with 4:25 left in the half. The Broncos battled back with the next seven points to cut the deficit to one (30-29) as the clock read 1:53. Possession went back-and-forth with neither side being able to find the bottom of the net. With the final possession, Alyssa DeAngelo hit a jumper at the horn as Fairmont State led 32-29.

In the second half, Fayetteville State started to find its footing once more. The Broncos went on a 13-1 run over five minutes to go ahead 42-36 with 4:16 left in the period. The Falcons found their rhythm as they scored eight of the final 10 points with eight coming from Aaliyah Brunny. Going to the final 10 minutes of regulation, the game was gridlocked at 44.

Fayetteville State dropped in the first four points as Fairmont State tried to cut down the margin as Huffman laid one in off a steal to make it 53-48. The Broncos grasped control of the game with an 11-0 run to lead by 16 (64-48) with 3:20 to go.

DeAngelo and Huffman found their shots from behind the arch and cut it down to six (66-60) as DeAngelo scored nine of the team's 12 points in the 12-1 run. Unfortunately, that was the closest the Falcons got as Fayetteville State went on for the eight-point win.

"It wasn't our day, there is not much we can do about that," DeAngelo commented. "Shots we make a majority of the time along with drives we normally convert on, we were turning it over. It was just one of those days."

Leading the way for the Falcons was Huffman with 21 points and 11 rebounds as DeAngelo added 20 points.

"We struggled a little tonight but we had so many other games where it seemed we couldn't miss," Huffman said afterwards. "I wouldn't trade any of my teammates and coaching staff for anybody else. It is who I want on the floor with me and to look back at everything we accomplished is incredible."

Fairmont State finishes the year 27-6 and claiming the program's first conference tournament title while also winning the regular season title.
