Falcons Drops Two to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team wrapped up its weekend road trip at the University of Charleston. The Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles in both games, 4-2 and 6-3.

Game One: Charleston 4, Fairmont State 2

Both teams struggled offensively in the first game with only two hits in the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Fairmont State notched the first run when Ryan Goff advanced to third on a single by Cameron Sheets. Goff scored on the play as the left fielder misplayed the ball.

With the bases loaded in the same frame, Vince Sabatino hit an infield single as Sheets scored. FSU held the early 2-0 lead.

It took until the bottom of the sixth for Charleston to get on the board as it scored on an RBI single to left field. Trailing by one going to the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Eagles pieced together two singles and a fielder's choice to have two runners on with one out. With one swing of the bat, the hosts walked off the game for the 4-2 win.

Zane Loveday started on the mound for the Falcons, going 4.2 innings in the no decision. He allowed four hits, three walks with six strikeouts.

Game Two: Charleston 6, Fairmont State 3

The second game was totally opposite to the first as Charleston pounced in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back RBI knocks, a three-run homer was lifted over the right field wall to put the home side in front, 5-0.

In the top of the second, Fairmont State cut into the deficit when Zach Brennan drew a walk with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Quintin Smith lifted a ball into right field as Tyler Haskins tagged up and scored.

The Golden Eagles held the three-run (5-2) lead until the bottom of the third when they added to it with a sacrifice fly to left. The Falcons scored the final run of the game in the top of the fourth as Sabatino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The visitors had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to capitalize.

Fairmont State hosts Davis & Elkins College on Friday, March 29 for a doubleheader. The opening game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
