WHEELING, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team continued its stretch of road games as it faced Wheeling University. The Falcons captured both games from the Cardinals, 4-3 and 8-5.
Game One: Fairmont State 4, Wheeling 3
Following a scoreless first inning, Fairmont State got on the board in the second as
Alexa Andrews tripled to bring in two runs. Andrews then scored as
Grace Sobeck laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the Falcons ahead 3-0.
Wheeling remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when it scored three runs on two hits and an error. The game was tied through the sixth inning and in the seventh,
Katy Darnell was able to give the visitors the lead as
Hannah Workman scored on a sacrifice fly.
Down to the final three outs, the Cardinals quickly registered two of them. Following a walk,
Delaney Haller was called upon to for the final out as she got a strike out for the save, her fifth, and the Falcon win.
Jordan Popowski earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing just one hit and giving up two walks. Darnell was a perfect 3-3 with driving in the winning run.
Game Two: Fairmont State 8, Wheeling 5
The Falcons opened the scoring of the second in the opening inning as
Hannah Workman was able to score on a defensive miscue. With the 1-0 lead, FSU went to work offensively in the third.
Emily Riggs drove in the first run as
Kensy Thomas scored on the ground ball.
Courtney Moyer followed with an RBI single to bring home
Bella Hess. Darnell then drove in a run before
Peyton Wetherholt hit an RBI single to hand the visitors a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Wheeling responded with five runs on five hits as Haller came in relief and recorded the final two outs. The Cardinals looked to take the lead in the fourth with a runner on third with one out but a pop-up and a strikeout ended the threat.
Fairmont State recaptured the lead in the fifth when Moyer scored on an error that allowed Wetherholt to score. Andrews then doubled as Darnell came around to score.
Kamilla Slayton brought home the final run on a sacrifice fly to right as the team went ahead by three (8-5).
Over the final three innings, Wheeling was held to one hit as two runners were able to reach base but that was as far they got as FSU won the game and swept the series.Â
Haller earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings with two hits and five strikeouts. Four different Falcons finished the game with multiple hits including 2-3 performances from Hess and Andrews.
Fairmont State (36-10, 19-5) returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday, April 26 to face West Virginia State. Game one is slated for 2:00 p.m.
