FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team concluded its four-game set against Wheeling University. Thanks to two walk-off hits off the bat of
Noah Canterbury, the Falcons bested the Cardinals in both games, 8-7 and 11-10.
Game One: Fairmont State 8, Wheeling 7
In the first inning, Wheeling took the early lead as it scored two runs on four walks and a hit by pitch. The Cardinals added a run in the second with an RBI single through the right side. The visitors added another run on a single in the third to lead 3-0.
Cameron Moore put Fairmont State on the board with a lead off home run over the right field wall. Following a base hit and a walk,
Noah Canterbury doubled to right center to bring home
Ryan Goff and
Quintin Smith to narrow the gap to one (4-3).
Wheeling grew the lead back to three (6-3) in the fourth with a two-run homer to center field. WU scored one final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
With only two innings to go, the Falcons went to work with the bats as Moore drove in
Vince Sabatino on a single to right field. After a pitching change, Goff drove in
Connor Bailey with a base hit. With the bases loaded,
Cameron Sheets lifted a ball to left as Moore tagged up from third and scored to make it a 7-6 game.
In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals had the bases loaded with just one out. However, the chance was quickly squandered as
Andrew Coursin struck out the final two batters to give FSU a chance to tie and win the game.
After two quick outs,
Connor Bailey reached on a single and advanced to second. Moore stepped to the plate and kept his solid game going with a single up the middle as Bailey came around and tied the game.
Goff doubled to left center and forced the visitors to intentionally walk Smith to have a force out at every base.
Noah Canterbury stepped in the box and hit a ball into left center hand the Falcons the one-run (8-7) win.
Game Two: Fairmont State 11, Wheeling 10
Fairmont State was the first to score in game two as Sheets doubled down the right field line as Goff and Smith scored. With the lead,
Logan McClure went to work on the mound and shut down Wheeling.Â
It took until the fourth inning for the visitors to register their first base runner and hit but left two runners stranded. Through the first 12 outs, McClure struck out eight of the batters he faced.Â
The Falcons added to their lead in the fourth when
Zach Brennan doubled to center field as
Xavier Lopez and
Tyler Haskins scored. Later in the frame, Goff singled up the middle as Bailey crossed home to put the hosts ahead, 5-0.
Following another 1-2-3 inning by Wheeling, Sabatino drove a ball over the wall in left center to increase the lead by three (8-0).In the sixth though, the Cardinals used the long ball to their advantage. After three home runs in the inning, the difference was narrowed to just three (8-5).
Noah Canterbury continued his run production for the day in the sixth as he doubled to right center to once more bring home Goff and Smith to make it a 10-5 game going to the seventh.Â
Unfortunately, Wheeling was not done as it showed plate discipline drawing six walks in the frame. With the addition of two hits, the guests scored five runs and evened the game at 10.
The bottom of the seventh was jumped started by a Bailey single and after a Goff double with one, the Cardinals intentionally walked Smith to load the bases, a replica of game one. Just like the first game, Canterbury stepped in and lifted a ball to center field as Bailey tagged from third to score the winning run.Â
Goff finished the game 4-4 while Canterbury was 2-4 with one run and three RBIs. Coursin earned both wins coming out of the bullpen for the Falcons.
Fairmont State is set to travel to West Liberty University on Saturday, April 27 to open a four-game matchup. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
