FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team hosted the other Falcons of the Mountain East Conference, Notre Dame College. FSU fell in a 10-inning thriller, 7-5, before taking game two, 3-1.
Game One: Notre Dame 7, Fairmont State 5 (10 Inn.)
Notre Dame kicked off the scoring in the first with an RBI single down the left field line. Fairmont State quickly responded as
Emily Riggs launched one over the left field fence to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
FSU added to its total in the second when
Bella Hess singled through the left side as
Grace Sobeck scored. The home side kept the momentum going in the third as Riggs scored on a
Courtney Moyer single.Â
The 4-1 lead remained until the fifth when the visitors scored on a double to right field. Following a fielder's choice, Notre Dame scored once more to make it a one-run (4-3) game. With two outs, NDC scored once more on a single to center to even the game at 4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fairmont State had runners on first and second with no outs. Unfortunately, both runners were stranded at their respective bases as the game ventured to the seventh.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the seventh. In the eighth, Notre Dame seemed to be in position to score but a strikeout and a pop up gave the home side a chance to win the game. With two outs, FSU loaded the bases but a fly ball to left prolonged the game.Â
After a scoreless ninth, the game ventured to the 10th as the international tiebreaker rule came into play as a runner starts on second base. Notre Dame used a pinch hitter and with one swing of the bat, it took a 6-4 lead. The guests added a run on a fielder's choice to hold a 7-4 lead going to the bottom of the 10th.
Fairmont State looked to do the same as
Alexa Andrews doubled down the left field line as
Katy Darnell scored from second. However, that was end of the scoring for the home side in the three-hour game.
Despite the loss,
Alyssa McCormick threw nine innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) while throwing 135 pitches.
Game Two: Fairmont State 3, Notre Dame 1
In game two, it was FSU that got the scoring started as

Notre Dame tied the game in the fifth with a two-out single to center field. Fairmont State swiftly recaptured the lead in the bottom half when
Hannah Workman reached on an error as
Sydney Emanuel scored.
The home side scored the final run of the game in the sixth as Moyer tagged from third on a sacrifice fly hit by Emanuel for the 3-1 lead. Haller closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning for the win. Haller pitched a complete game, allowing the lone run (earned) on six hits while collecting four strikeouts.Â
