CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team continued its play in the Mountain East Conference Tournament against West Virginia State University. Leading by one going into the eighth, the Falcons added five runs en route to the 9-3 win.
This is the first time Fairmont State has won two games in the MEC Tournament. The last time the program accomplished such feat was in the 2013 WVIAC Baseball Tournament.
West Virginia State opened the game with an RBI ground out in the top of the first. As neither team scored its next half innings, Fairmont State came back up in the bottom of the second. With two outs,
Micah Canterbury drew a walk as
Quintin Reep came up and lifted one over the center field wall for the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the third, the Yellow Jackets responded with back-to-back RBI singles to right field to take a 3-2 lead. Both sides left runners on base over the next couple of innings until the bottom of the fifth.
Zach Brennan led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a ground ball.
Ryan Goff was next in line as he doubled to bring in Brennan to tie the game at three. In the sixth, WVSU was able to get runners on first and third with one out but a 5-4-3 double play ended the chance.
The Yellow Jackets threatened once more in the seventh with a lead off single and then a walk.
Mac Schnur was called in from the bullpen and delivered three-straight strikeouts to end the chance.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Quintin Smith was able to reach first on a two-out single. A failed pickoff attempt moved Smith to second.
Noah Canterbury then singled to right field as Smith raced home to give FSU the one-run lead (4-3).
Despite a lead off walk, Schnur struck out the next three to let his offense go to work. The Falcons worked the bases loaded with Brennan coming to bat. Brennan dropped one into left field as
Cameron Hines scored.
Cameron Moore followed with a double to center field to bring home Reep and
Vince Sabatino.
Leading 7-3,
Ryan Goff stepped in the box and hit an RBI single to left field. Smith rounded out the scoring for Fairmont State with a sacrifice fly to right as Moore tagged from third to give the team a 9-3 lead going to the ninth.
Out of the pen came
Logan McClure looking to preserve the win. The senior pitcher caught the first batter looking for strike three. This followed with a pop up to second base as the Yellow Jackets were down to their final out. McClure struck out the final batter for the six-run victory.
Reep finished the day 3-3 from the plate while driving in two runs and scoring two more. Schnur picked up the win, throwing two innings in relief with six strikeouts and just one walk.
Will Knight started on the mound, going six innings with three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and striking out four.
Fairmont State will face the Charleston Golden Eagles from GoMart Ballpark on Saturday, May 11. First-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
