FROSTBURG, Md. - The Fairmont State University completed its home-and-home series with Frostburg State University. The Falcons split with the Bobcats, falling in game one 7-5 before taking game two, 9-8.
Game One: Frostburg State 7, Fairmont State 5
Both teams left a runner on base in the first inning as Fairmont State returned to the batters box. With one out,
Micah Canterbury got the Falcons on the board with a home run over the left field wall. After a
Quintin Reep double,
Vince Sabatino reached on an error that allowed him to advance to second as Reep crossed home.
Still in the second,
Cameron Moore hit an infield single and on the play, a miscue occurred allowing Sabatino to score. Fairmont State led 3-0 going to the bottom half of the inning. Frostburg State got on the board in the second with an RBI double to right center.
In the third, the Falcons regained a three-run advantage (4-1) as
Cameron Sheets launched one over the right center fence. The Bobcats answered as they scored a run on a sacrifice fly.Â
Frostburg State carried its momentum into the fourth as it added another run on a sacrifice fly to narrow the margin to one (4-3). Fairmont State added to its total in the fifth when
Micah Canterbury was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Bobcats scored in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball. Later in the frame, the hosts evened the game with a double to left field.Â
In the sixth, the Falcons loaded the bases but a double play ended the threat. The home squad was able to take the lead as there was an error in the outfield. Later in the inning, they added to it on a passed ball and led 7-5.
Fairmont State had one last chance to tie the game, but were unable to do so as it fell by the two-run difference.
Game Two: Fairmont State 9, Frostburg State 8
The Falcons once again captured the early lead, this time in the first inning as
Noah Canterbury singled to center field to bring home
Cameron Moore and
Quintin Smith. The Bobcats got on the board in the first with an RBI single to right field.
Moving to the second,
Ryan Goff drove in Sabatino with fielder's choice. With two runners one, Smith lifted one that carried over the left field wall to give the Falcons a 6-1 advantage.
The visitors held the five-run lead until the bottom of the third when Frostburg State scored two on a double to left field. Carrying into the fourth, the hosts tied the game with one swing of the bat. They then took the lead with an RBI single to left field, 7-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bobcats added their lead with an RBI single to left. Fairmont State looked to cut into the deficit and with the bases loaded,
Noah Canterbury hit an infield single as
Zach Brennan was able to score.Â
Sheets then drew a walk as Moore scored to even the game at eight. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance with Smith stepping on home to hand the Falcons its first lead since the bottom of the fourth.Â
Frostburg State was able to produce an one-out single but a pop up and fly ball brought an end to the inning. In the top of the seventh, the Falcons were able to have runners on first and second with two outs but then the game went into a weather delay.
After some time, the two teams returned to the field but it was determined that they could not proceed as the call was officially called.Â
With the win, Fairmont State will officially await the seedings for the Mountain East Conference Tournament in Charleston which kicks off on Wednesday, May 8.
