TROUTVILLE, Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team looked to continue its run in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Falcons fell in game one to Notre Dame 3-1 before facing West Liberty in an elimination game. FSU fell to the Hilltoppers in extra innings, 2-1.
Game One: Notre Dame 3, Fairmont 1
The first game was pitchers duel as both starters matched each other in the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, Fairmont State had runners on second and third with no outs but struggled to bring a run home.
FSU seemed poised to strike in the bottom of third but
Bella Hess was caught trying to steal third to end the frame. In the fourth, Notre Dame got on the board first with an RBI single to right field. Another RBI single made it a 2-0 game.
The home team once again had runners in scoring position but were unable to capitalize, a theme of the day for the team in maroon. Both teams left a runner on in the fifth as NDC added to its lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to lead 3-0.
Peyton Wetherholt put FSU on the board with a double to right center as
Courtney Moyer came around to score.
Alexa Andrews followed with an infield single and after a double steal, the team had runners on second and third but a strikeout ended the chance.
Notre Dame went down in order to start the seventh as Fairmont State was down to its final three outs. FSU was able to get a runner on but that was the extent of the inning as Notre Dame captured the two-run game.
Game Two: West Liberty 2, Fairmont State 1 (8 Inn.)
In an elimination game, both teams were looking to extend their stays at the MEC Tournament. Neither team was able to strike in the first inning as the Falcons had runners on in the bottom of the second.
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz stepped up and singled right up the middle as
Alexa Andrews scored for the 1-0 lead.
Both pitchers found a groove as the game moved along to the fifth inning. In the top half of the inning, West Liberty was able to tie the game on a throwing error.
Neither side had a chance in the sixth as the Hilltoppers threatened in the seventh but a relay throw from Darnell to Riggs caught the runner trying to advance to end the inning. The Falcons were unable to get a runner on in the seventh as the game ventured to extra innings.
In the eighth, West Liberty pieced together a walk and two-consecutive singles to take a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, Fairmont State was unable to get a runner in scoring position as it fell by one-run.
Fairmont State now awaits to see if it will be selected for the Atlantic Regional which comes out on Monday, May 6.
