Women's Volleyball Sweeps Glenville State to Open MEC Play

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team opened Mountain East Conference play against Glenville State University. The Falcons swept the Pioneers by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22.

Joey Borelle led the team with her 12th double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs while recording four aces. Baylie Ostvig added 10 kills as Kelsie Dangerfield finished with 22 assists. Belle DeVall tallied 17 assists as Josie Skinn ended the evening with 10 digs.

In the first set, the two squads were evenly matched until Fairmont State scored four-straight with two aces from Jay Miller to give the team a 10-6 lead. The Falcons maintained the lead throughout the set and on the serve of Dangerfield closed out the set with the final point coming from Borelle. The home side took the first set by the score of 25-17.

Fairmont State captured the early lead in the second set as it led 6-2. The Falcons slowly expanded upon their lead and following back-to-back kills from Ostvig, the team led 16-8. With a comfortable lead, the hosts cruised to a 10-point win (25-15) and led the match 2-0.

The third set started with each side answering the others attack until Fairmont State rattled off six-consecutive points with a pair of kills from Ostvig and Josie Nobbe to match two aces from Borelle to make it a 17-11 set score. Glenville State responded with its own run of seven points to take an 18-17 lead. Neither team was able to separate from the other as the score was tied at 22. Following an error, Borelle and Chloe McDaniel converted on consecutive attacks to take the set, 25-22, and the match in straight sets.

Fairmont State (10-5, 1-0) hits the road on Tuesday, October 1 to face Wheeling University. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
