FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team hit the road to battle Frostburg State University. The Falcons and Bobcats were scoreless for a majority of the contest as the home side was able to put one in late for the 1-0 win.
In the first half, the two squads went up and down the pitch with both teams placing shots on target. However, Fairmont State's
Olivia Johnston and Frostburg State's Katie Sterne stopped each shot they faced at three apiece.
As the clock ran out on the first half, the match remained scoreless.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the second half as most of the action occurred near midfield. With two minutes left in regulation, the Bobcats placed a header on target but Johnston once again made the stop.
About 30 seconds later, Frostburg State's Madison Allen was tied up with a Fairmont State defender and was able to just chip the ball towards the net. Johnston, who came out to play the potential loose ball, tried to race back to stop the shot but it had the right amount of english and pace to score the contest's lone goal.
The Falcons'
Braylyn Sparks attempted one last shot but Sterne made the save as home side won by the one-goal margin. Johnston finished the day with five saves as the Falcons placed five shots on goal.
Fairmont State (4-2-1, 3-1-0) hosts Concord University on Wednesday, October 2 from Duvall-Rosier Field. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
