FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team entertained the Tigers of Salem University inside of Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons were able to take down the Tigers, 75-62.
With the win, head coach
Stephanie Anderson reached 100 wins in her coaching career. She only the third coach in program history to reach this milestone with the Falcons.Â
Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers with 23 points, as she was 9-15 from the field and 5-9 from three-point range.
Leslie Huffman added in 15 points while
Jalen Gibbs finished with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The bench proved vital for the team as it contributed 22 points.
The afternoon started with both teams exchanging field goals for the first six minutes. Trailing 10-9, Fairmont State (13-3) went on a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead (18-10) with 1:28 left on the clock. The Falcons were able to maintain the eight-point advantage going to the second period.
Salem (1-15) opened the second period with an early field goal but FSU wasted little time getting back into an offensive rhythm. Over the course of the second, the Falcons slowly stretched their lead and eventually led 38-20 with 1:58 left in the half. The Tigers scored the next five points but a late three by
Leila Jones made it a 41-25 game going to halftime.Â
In the third period, Salem once again scored the opening points but Fairmont State grasped control with a 15-2 stretch over six minutes to lead 56-29. During the run, both
Aaliyah Brunny and
Alyssa DeAngelo each scored five points. With the final 10 minutes of regulation coming up, the Falcons led 58-31.
FSU continued its strong run in the fourth by extending the difference to 31 (70-39). Over the final five minutes, Salem put together a strong performance and closed the game by outscoring the home squad 23-5 but the deficit was too large as the Falcons won by 13 (75-62).
Fairmont State returns to Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday, January 22 as it faces Davis & Elkins College on the road. Start time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
