ELKINS, W.Va. -- The 10th-ranked Fairmont State University men's basketball ventured to face the Davis & Elkins College Senators. A strong shooting performance from the field, the Falcons were able to dispatch the Senators, 94-70.
Andre Harris produced 25 points for the Falcons as
David Jolinder added 20.
Taj Thweatt finished the night with 11 points as
Rudy Fitzgibbons and
Sam Emich each scored 10. On the night, the team was 33-51 (64.7%) from the field while also making 20 of its 27 free throw attempts.
Fairmont State (15-2, 9-1) raced out to a 7-0 lead with five points coming from
Andre Harris. Davis & Elkins (6-11, 3-7) tried to slow down the momentum but the visitors were not done with their hot start. The Falcons then went on a 13-3 run over three minutes to lead 20-5 with 11:57 on the clock. During the run,
Sam Emich hit both of his three-point attempts.
The Senators tried to narrow the gap but FSU kept the offensive pressure and eventually lead by 20 (28-8) with just under nine minutes to go. D&E gradually found its offensive presence and eventually cut the difference down to 13 (44-31) by the halftime horn.
In the second half, the pace quickened between the two squads as they nearly matched each other for majority of the half. Still holding to a double-digit advantage, Fairmont State used a 9-0 stretch to lead 86-62 with 5:22 left in regulation.
Free throws were critical to the Falcons success on the night, especially in the second half where they went 15-19 from the charity stripe. The maroon and white were able to maintain the advantage and won by the final score of 94-70.
The Falcons were able to force 19 turnovers while only committing 10 on the night. The team then turned those turnovers into 28 points and also scored 17 on the fast break.
Fairmont State will host the Bobcats of Frostburg State on Saturday, January 25 on Dan Cava Court. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
