ATHENS, W.Va. — Fairmont State edged Concord University 3-2 on Wednesday at Callaghan Stadium. The Falcons took an early lead with two first-half goals and added a third in the second half to secure the win. The Mountain Lions managed to score once in each half but could not overcome the deficit. Fairmont State's goalkeeper made three crucial saves, including two in the first half, to maintain the advantage.
The first half kicked off with the Falcons taking an early lead, as
Serenity Thomas scored in the 4th minute, assisted by
Valentina Gianinetto. Building on this momentum,
Montserrat Diaz found the back of the net with an assist from
Filippa Stalhammar in the 26th minute, extending the Falcons' lead to 2-0.
The Mountain Lions responded in the 30th minute with a goal by Tiana Campbell, assisted by Caitlin Webster, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Despite multiple fouls, the Falcons maintained their advantage, closing the half ahead 2-1.
The second half opened with the Falcons maintaining their lead and creating several scoring opportunities. Diaz and
Braylyn Sparks each tested the Mountain Lions' defense with shots, but neither could find the back of the net, as Maddie Loughborough made several key saves for the home team.
The Falcons extended their lead in the 83rd minute when
Dayra Dinarte found the goal, pushing the score to 3-1. However, the Mountain Lions responded quickly with a goal from Campbell, assisted by Ella Rowell, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Despite the Mountain Lions' late push, the Falcons held firm, with
Olivia Johnston making a crucial save in the final minute to secure the victory.
Thomas scored one goal and converted both of her shots on target. Diaz tallied one goal and led her team with four shots, two of which were on goal. Dinarte netted the game-winning goal with her only shot, contributing decisively to the team's victory. Stalhammar provided an assist, setting up a key play in the match.
Fairmont State (6-0-1, 4-0-1) returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Sunday, October 5 to face West Virginia State University. First kick is slated for 1:00 p.m.
