GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Fairmont State defeated Glenville State 3-0 on Sunday at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. The Falcons scored all three goals in a dominant second half, with the team's goalkeeper recording seven saves to secure a shutout.
The first half began with Fairmont State creating several early opportunities against Glenville State, highlighted by
Valentina Gianinetto's attempt, which was saved by Lucia Lopez. The Falcons maintained offensive pressure, earning multiple corner kicks and generating shots from Agnes Maerta Bjoerk and
Dayra Dinarte, though none found the back of the net.
Despite relentless attempts, including a close shot by
Serenity Thomas, Fairmont State could not convert, with Lopez consistently denying the efforts on goal. The Pioneers managed to counter with a few offensive plays, but
Olivia Johnston's save on Hannah Hill's shot kept the half scoreless. The half closed with Fairmont State maintaining offensive momentum, yet the score remained tied at 0-0.
The second half began with Fairmont State quickly establishing dominance as Gianinetto found the back of the net in the 46th minute, assisted by Thomas. This early goal set the tone for the Falcons, and just minutes later,
Stephanie Pedias extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal assisted by Gianinetto in the 49th minute.
The Falcons maintained pressure throughout the half, with Johnston making key saves to deny Glenville State's scoring attempts. As the half progressed, Fairmont State continued to test the Pioneers' defense, culminating in
Montserrat Diaz's goal in the 89th minute to secure a commanding 3-0 victory as the final whistle blew.
Johnston recorded seven saves in goal, helping secure a shutout victory for the Falcons. Gianinetto scored the game-winning goal as well as an assist. Thomas contributed with an assist and posted two shots on goal. Diaz added to the scoreline with one goal, converting two of her three shots on target.
Fairmont State (8-1-1, 6-1-1) comes back home to face the University of Charleston on Wednesday, October 15. First kick is set for 7:00 p.m.
