ELKINS, W.Va. — Fairmont State University and Davis & Elkins College played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Nuttall Field. Fairmont State struck first with a goal in the 21st minute, registering five shots on goal throughout the match. Davis & Elkins equalized in the second half, with both teams' goalkeepers each making five saves.
The first half began with Fairmont State creating early opportunities, highlighted by a corner kick at the 4:39 mark.
Olivia Johnston made a key save in the 21st minute to deny Davis & Elkins' Brenda Castro from opening the scoring. Fairmont State capitalized on momentum when
Serenity Thomas found the back of the net in the 30th minute, giving the visiting team a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons maintained their advantage with solid defensive play, including multiple saves by Johnston, who thwarted several attempts by the home side. Despite a few offside calls, the Falcons ended the half ahead 1-0, setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the match.
The second half commenced with the Falcons applying immediate pressure, as
Ava Yannucci's shot in the 47th minute was saved by the opposing goalkeeper, Gabriela Acevedo.
Montserrat Diaz followed with another attempt just minutes later, demonstrating the team's offensive persistence but without success.
The Senators responded with a goal in the 73rd minute by Taytum Walls. The Falcons continued to press forward, with shots from
Payton Parliament and
Filippa Stalhammar requiring saves from Acevedo. Despite several corner opportunities, the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net.
The half concluded with a 1-1 draw after the Falcons were unable to capitalize on late chances, maintaining the tie at the final whistle.
Johnston recorded five saves, facing eight shots on goal and conceding just one. Thomas scored the team's only goal with her lone shot being on target. Stalhammar contributed offensively with two shots, one of which was on goal.
