FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State swept Frostburg State 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 on Friday at Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State recorded 46 kills and seven service aces, overpowering Frostburg State in straight sets.
Fairmont State initiated the first set with a balanced offensive strategy.
Cayden Anschutz and
Josie Nobbe notched early kills, setting the pace and establishing a lead.
Zoe Ringer facilitated with multiple assists, contributing to a consistent scoring pattern. The Falcons capitalized on the Bobcats' errors, with
Joey Borelle and
Gabi Smith both adding to the scoreline through a combination of kills and service aces.
Midway through the set, Fairmont State extended their control with a series of impactful plays, including blocks and aces. Borelle led with a strong presence, adding crucial points through offensive plays.
Belle DeVall's setting proved pivotal as the Falcons continued to build momentum. The set concluded with the Falcons securing a 25-15 victory, closing out efficiently with a service error from the Bobcats.
Fairmont State began the second set with a strong start, capitalizing on a service error by the Bobcats to take an early lead. Nobbe and Anschutz contributed kills, both assisted by Ringer, to extend the advantage to 3-0. A series of defensive plays, including blocks by Nobbe and Smith, helped maintain momentum as the Falcons pushed the score to 8-2.
Despite the Bobcats' attempts to narrow the gap, the Falcons consistently responded with effective plays. Notable contributions included kills from Smith and
Natalie Zemba, with Ringer continuing to facilitate the offense. The Falcons maintained a lead, closing the set with a score of 25-20, securing the set.
Fairmont State opened the third set with a decisive offensive surge, quickly securing a 5-0 lead with contributions from Anschutz and Borelle, and a service ace from Ringer. The Bobcats responded by narrowing the gap to 5-3, but Fairmont regained momentum with a service ace from Nobbe, pushing the score to 11-8.
The set saw back-and-forth action as Frostburg leveled the score at 13-13. Fairmont pulled ahead again, highlighted by kills from Borelle and Smith, reaching a 23-21 lead. Despite the Bobcats' efforts to close the gap, Fairmont secured the final points with a kill from Borelle, closing the set at 25-22.
Joey Borelle led the Falcons with 13 kills on 32 attempts, achieving a .375 hitting percentage and adding 13 digs.
Cayden Anschutz contributed nine kills on 18 swings, maintaining a .389 hitting percentage.
Josie Nobbe added 10 kills while also serving two aces and recording a solo block.
Belle DeVall facilitated the attack with 18 assists and registered seven digs.
Fairmont State (23-9, 10-4) now awaits the annoucement of the Mountain East Conference Tournament to see who and where it will be playing. The tournament starts on Thursday, November 20.
