FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Frostburg State University defeated Fairmont State University 35-18 on Saturday at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Fairmont State started with possession, advancing to their own 42-yard line through gains by
Nino Marzullo and
Leonard Farrow. However, a holding penalty pushed them back, resulting in a punt to the Frostburg State 34-yard line.
Frostburg State capitalized by driving 66 yards on 10 plays, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Owen Doyle, putting them ahead 7-0. Fairmont State's defense then stopped a subsequent Frostburg drive at their own 1-yard line, forcing a turnover on downs.
Fairmont State regained possession with 2:56 remaining in the quarter. Despite a strong rushing performance by Marzullo and
LeJay Hatcher, the first quarter ended with Fairmont trailing 7-0.
The second quarter began with Fairmont driving effectively downfield, highlighted by Hatcher's groundwork, contributing a 10-yard rush and setting up a series of positive plays. However, the drive was halted following a missed 51-yard field goal attempt by
Emmanuel Richardson. Shortly after,
Jevonte Wilson intercepted a pass from Frostburg State's Jordan Brooks at the 32-yard line, returning it to the 30-yard line to regain possession for Fairmont.
Following the interception, Fairmont's offense struggled to capitalize, resulting in a turnover on downs after an incomplete pass on a deep attempt. Frostburg responded with a 63-yard pass completion, leading to a touchdown pass from Brooks to Cruiz Paul-Umstead, extending their lead. Despite this, Fairmont regained momentum with a strong drive that included a 20-yard rush by Marzullo, culminating in a successful 36-yard field goal by Richardson, putting Fairmont on the board. The quarter concluded with Fairmont trailing Frostburg 14-3.
The Bobcats opened the third quarter with a drive that started at their own 46-yard line, advancing to the Falcons' 1-yard line in a series of first downs before Owen Doyle rushed for a touchdown at 12:43, followed by Tyler Cook's successful extra point. Fairmont responded with a kickoff return by
Jolann Alston to the 28-yard line. However, Marzullo's pass was intercepted by Jaylen Boyd, stalling the drive.
The Falcons' defense then held strong, with
Saumir Deshields sacking Frostburg's quarterback for no gain, and
Nemo Roberts adding another sack for a 7-yard loss.
Karron Watties blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt to keep the score within reach. On their next possession, Fairmont executed a 9-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 34-yard rush by Hatcher. Marzullo capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, and Richardson added the extra point.
As the third quarter concluded, the Bobcats held possession, but Fairmont narrowed the deficit to 21-10, setting the stage for a competitive final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Fairmont started strong defensively by forcing Frostburg into an intentional grounding penalty, shifting momentum momentarily. However, Frostburg capitalized soon after with a 35-yard touchdown pass by Brooks to Paul-Umstead, extending their lead to 27-10.
The Falcons responded with a determined drive, highlighted by a 22-yard rush from Hatcher, setting up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Marzullo to
Joey Ramsey. The successful two-point conversion attempt by Hatcher narrowed the gap to 27-18.
Despite Fairmont's efforts, Frostburg reestablished control with a series of effective rushes, culminating in a two-yard touchdown run by KJ Smothers, extending the lead to 35-18. Fairmont attempted to rally in the final minutes, but a turnover on downs halted progress. The game concluded with the Bobcats maintaining their lead, ending with a final score of 35-18.
Hatcher led the team with 120 rushing yards on 17 carries, adding two receptions for seven yards. Marzullo completed 11 of 26 passes for 75 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. On defense, Deshields recorded two sacks among his seven tackles. Wilson contributed with an interception and two tackles.
Fairmont State concludes the 2025 season with a 6-5 record while going 3-5 in conference play.
