FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State faced the University of Charleston for the Mountain East Conference Championship on Sunday at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Falcons secured a decisive 4-1 victory over the Golden Eagles to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
The match began with the Falcons establishing early offensive pressure, as
Braylyn Sparks and
Montserrat Diaz both attempted shots within the first 15 minutes. Despite missing the target, the Falcons maintained momentum with a corner kick shortly thereafter.
In the 30th minute,
Agnes Bjork capitalized on a chance, scoring to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. The team continued to press, and in the 43rd minute,
Payton Parliament extended the lead to 2-0 with an assist from Diaz. The Falcons concluded the first half with a two-goal advantage, heading into the break with confidence.
The second period began with the Golden Eagles narrowing the gap as Sydney Crowe found the net in the 49th minute, assisted by Jamie Bland, making the score 2-1. The Falcons responded with
Filippa Stalhammar scoring in the 60th minute, off a corner kick from Diaz, to restore their two-goal advantage at 3-1.
The Falcons' defense held firm as they continued to press forward.
Serenity Thomas extended the lead further with a goal in the 80th minute, solidifying the score at 4-1. The match concluded with the Falcons maintaining their commanding position, securing a 4-1 victory at the final whistle.
Serenity Thomas scored one goal on two shots, with both attempts on target.
Payton Parliament contributed one goal, which was the game-winner, from her only shot of the match. Diaz provided two assists while recording six shots, two of which were on goal. Sparks led the team with four shots, including one on goal.

Montserrat Diaz.
Earning the automatic qualifier for the conference, Fairmont State now awaits the NCAA selection show for the Division II Championship on Monday, November 17. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and can be watched on
