Fairmont State Capitalizes on Turnovers to Beat Bloomsburg

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (4-0) defeated Bloomsburg (3-1), 78-60, at Joe Retton Arena, capitalizing on 16 steals to secure the win. The Falcons scored 30 points off turnovers, contributing significantly to their decisive victory.

Fairmont State opened the first quarter with a solid defensive effort, highlighted by a steal from Zaniya Murray just six seconds into the game. Alanna Tate contributed significantly to the offense, scoring an early layup and later adding a three-pointer, keeping the hosts competitive throughout the quarter. Despite tying the game at 17 with Leslie Huffman's layup at the 1:01 mark, the Falcons concluded the quarter trailing the Huskies 19–17, after a late fast-break jumper by Alison Hatajik with six seconds remaining.

Fairmont State surged ahead in the second quarter, beginning with Gabby Reep's layup at 9:51 to tie the score. Huffman contributed a critical 3-pointer at 7:20, assisted by Haylen Cook, narrowing Bloomsburg's lead. Reep's aggressive play led to multiple layups, helping the Falcons overcome a brief deficit and establish a 26–25 advantage at 6:09. 

Murray's free throws at 3:09 widened the gap, as Fairmont State capitalized on turnovers to build momentum. Huffman's layup with 36 seconds remaining, followed by Ryan Davis's two free throws, solidified the Falcons' 40–33 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Falcons seized control in the third quarter with a decisive sequence, beginning with Murray's layup at 7:59 that initiated a series of fast-break points. Reep followed with consecutive layups, extending Fairmont State's lead to 46–37. Tate and Huffman contributed with crucial assists and a 3-pointer from Huffman pushed the score to 51–38. 

Leila Jones added a 3-pointer with an assist from Tate to further extend the lead to 54–38. Despite Bloomsburg's efforts, Fairmont State closed the quarter strong with solid defensive play, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on free throws. The quarter ended with the Falcons leading 59–42, maintaining a comfortable advantage heading into the final frame.

The Falcons maintained control in the fourth quarter with strong performances in the paint, highlighted by Jones and Huffman, who combined for key scoring drives. Davis contributed with a layup early, building on Fairmont St.'s lead. Huffman was instrumental in the final minutes, securing a fastbreak layup and converting free throws, ensuring Fairmont State held their advantage. Despite Bloomsburg's efforts, including a three-pointer by Leah Kale, the Falcons' defensive rebounds and efficient scoring sealed the outcome. The game concluded with Fairmont State securing a 78–60 victory.

Huffman scored 27 points and collected nine rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Reep added 12 points and recorded three steals. Murray contributed 11 points and five steals. Tate finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, securing a double-double.

Fairmont State hits the road on Monday, November 24 to face Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
