Women's Soccer Falls to West Chester in NCAA Second Round

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Fairmont State fell to West Chester 2-0 on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. 

The match began with Fairmont State establishing their defensive presence, as Olivia Johnston made a critical save to deny Kianna Barber's shot. The team countered with an offensive effort, highlighted by shots from Agnes Maerta Bjoerk and Stephanie Pedias that tested West Chester's defense. Despite these efforts, West Chester gained the advantage when Lindsey Balmer scored in the 31st minute, assisted by Faith Matter. The Falcons continued to push forward, with Tatiana Mayumi and Payton Parliament delivering shots on goal, but the first half concluded with Fairmont State trailing 1-0.

The second half commenced with the Falcons applying early pressure as Dayra Dinarte took a shot in the 46th minute, but it was saved by the Golden Rams' goalkeeper, Grace Keen. Johnston made notable defensive contributions, saving multiple attempts, including shots from Faith Matter and Victoria Pungello. Despite several offensive efforts, including shots by Arrington Sparks and Montserrat Diaz, the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net. 

The Golden Rams' persistent attack paid off in the 84th minute when Pungello scored, assisted by Matter, extending their lead. Fairmont State continued to fight, but the match ended with West Chester maintaining a 2-0 advantage.

Johnston played a key role by recording eight saves in the match, facing 25 shots on target. Diaz contributed offensively with two shots, both of which were on goal. Braylyn Sparks added pressure with one shot on goal. Bjoerk also made her presence felt, taking two shots, one of which was on target.

Fairmont State finished with a program-best 17 wins with an overall record of 17-2-3.
