FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University defeated West Virginia State University 96-74 at Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State capitalized on turnovers, scoring 24 points off the Yellow Jackets' 15 turnovers. With a strong defensive effort, the Falcons recorded 10 steals and amassed 44 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. West Virginia St. managed 74 points, with 18 made free throws out of 24 attempts.
Fairmont State opened the first half with a strong performance, quickly overcoming an early deficit with a 9–0 run led by
Drey Carter's defensive efforts and key assists.
Zycheus Dobbs contributed significantly, securing fast break points and maintaining momentum throughout the half. The Falcons capitalized on turnovers, converting those into fast break opportunities, and dominated the paint with 28 points.
As the half progressed,
David Jolinder and
Tyheil Peterson added to the scoring with successful three-point shots and layups, extending the lead. Defensive rebounds and steals were crucial in maintaining the advantage over West Virginia State. By the end of the half, Fairmont State led 50–41, effectively managing possessions and maintaining a solid lead.

Carter led the team with 21 points, shooting 9 of 11 from the field, and added nine rebounds along with five assists. Jolinder contributed 17 points and nearly secured a double-double with nine rebounds while also assisting on three occasions. Dobbs scored 16 points, converting 6 of 7 field goal attempts, and grabbed five rebounds. Peterson made a defensive impact by recording five steals, and he also facilitated the offense with seven assists.
