FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State swept Salem 25-14, 25-17, 25-10 on Saturday at Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons showcased a strong offensive performance, hitting .333 with 42 kills. The team also delivered defensively with 51 digs and 8 total blocks.
The first set began with Fairmont State establishing an early lead through effective offensive play.
Joey Borelle recorded multiple kills with assists from
Zoe Ringer, while
Alexa Martin and
Josie Nobbe contributed additional points. The team capitalized on Salem's attack errors, extending the advantage with a service ace from
Belle DeVall.
Midway through the set, the Falcons maintained control with consecutive attack errors by Salem and a service ace by Nobbe. The home team continued to build on their lead as the Tigers struggled to find rhythm, allowing Fairmont State to widen the gap.
The set concluded with Fairmont State comfortably ahead, as Martin secured the final point with a kill, assisted by DeVall, ending the frame at 25-14. The Falcons closed the set with a decisive 11-point lead.
Fairmont State began the second set trailing slightly but quickly turned the momentum with a series of effective plays. After trailing 8-3, the Falcons launched a significant scoring run, beginning with
Natalie Zemba's kill, assisted by DeVall. Borelle then delivered three consecutive kills, assisted by
Josie Skinn and DeVall, helping to close the gap and eventually take the lead at 9-8. This surge continued as the Falcons capitalized on the Tigers' errors and strong defensive efforts, including blocks by
Gabi Smith and Zemba, extending their advantage.
As the set progressed, the Falcons maintained control, responding to Salem's attempts to close the gap. Key contributions from Martin and
Adella Rodriguez, both assisted by Ringer, helped secure points. Despite a couple of late errors, Fairmont State closed the set with a decisive 25-17 victory after a Salem service error, maintaining their strong performance and securing the set.
Fairmont State opened the third set with a balanced attack, with
Cayden Anschutz and Nobbe contributing early points to keep the score level against Salem. As the set progressed, the Falcons gained momentum through a series of successful plays, including a series of kills by Martin and Borelle, all assisted by Ringer. This offensive surge helped Fairmont State establish a significant lead.
The Falcons continued to extend their advantage with
McKenzi Martin and
Ashton Henrich adding crucial points to the scoreboard. A service ace from Skinn and a series of attack errors from the Tigers further widened the gap. The set concluded with Fairmont State securing a decisive 25-10 victory, capitalizing on strong performances across the roster and closing the match confidently.
Borelle led the team with 13 kills on 28 attempts, hitting at a .393 clip, and contributed three block assists. Martin posted an impressive .917 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 12 attempts while also adding four block assists. Skinn anchored the defense by recording 21 digs and adding four assists. DeVall facilitated the offense with 12 assists and also contributed nine digs.
