Strong Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough for Falcons

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The Fairmont State University women's basketball team (7-2, 2-1 MEC) was narrowly defeated by Glenville State University (5-2, 2-1 MEC), 77-74, on Wednesday evening.

Fairmont State opened the first quarter with a strong performance, highlighted by Alanna Tate's 3-pointer at 8:55, assisted by Haylen Cook. They maintained momentum with a series of successful plays, including a 3-pointer by Leila Jones at 3:40 that leveled the score at 12. Gabby Reep's layup at 2:30 extended the lead further, giving the Falcons a commanding position. By the end of the quarter, Fairmont State led 22–14.

The Falcons initially took the lead with a layup by Tate at 8:45, extending their advantage to 26–18. However, the Pioneers mounted a comeback, capitalizing on turnovers and scoring consistently in the paint to shift the momentum. Despite the Falcons' defensive efforts, including key rebounds by Ryan Davis, the Pioneers managed to pull ahead, ending the quarter with a 34–31 lead.

Fairmont State made an early push in the third quarter, with Cook scoring a layup followed by a fast-break layup from Zaniya Murray to briefly take the lead. Tate also contributed with a timely jumper in the paint, keeping the score tight. However, the Pioneers responded with a series of successful 3-pointers, regaining and extending their lead. Despite the Falcons' efforts, including a strong showing from Davis, who completed a three-point play with a tip-in and free throw, the Pioneers finished the quarter ahead. The quarter concluded with Glenville State leading 63–51.

The Falcons mounted a vigorous comeback effort in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap with a 23-point surge. Reep was instrumental, scoring multiple layups, including a critical one with 23 seconds left to bring the score within two points at 76–74. Defensive pressure was pivotal, leading to six steals and forcing the Pioneers into eight turnovers. Despite the late push, the Falcons fell short as the game ended with a 77–74 loss.

Cook led the Falcons with 17 points, converting 8 of 10 free throws and adding nine rebounds. Reep contributed with 11 points, recorded eight rebounds, and collected four steals. Tate posted 16 points, hitting seven baskets and adding two steals. Mackenzie Swayne scored 11 points and made 5 of 8 free throws.

Fairmont State returns home to face West Virginia State University on Wednesday, December 17. Game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
