GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Fairmont State University secured an 88-75 victory over Glenville State University on Wednesday at the Waco Center. The Falcons established a commanding 20-point lead at halftime, fueled by 36 points in the paint and 18 points off turnovers.
Fairmont State started strong, establishing an early lead through effective shooting and defensive stops.
Miguel Martinez contributed significantly with a series of baskets, including two free throws and a layup, helping the team to tie the score at 4-4 early.
David Jolinder's three-pointer at 12:52 extended the lead to 17-10, setting the tone for the Falcons' offensive momentum.
The Falcons capitalized on the Pioneers' turnovers, with
Tyheil Peterson and
CJ Meredith hitting back-to-back 3-pointers around the 8-minute mark, widening the gap to 35-20. The team maintained pressure with a well-rounded attack, highlighted by
Drey Carter's layup and free throw at 2:04, which pushed the lead to 46-30. The half closed with the Falcons firmly ahead, 50-30, after Jolinder's tip-in in the final seconds.
Fairmont State started the second half with a strong defensive presence, recording five steals that contributed to their momentum. Carter's offensive efforts were pivotal, as he secured key rebounds and converted opportunities in the paint, which helped in maintaining their edge. The team capitalized on turnovers, with Martinez and
Anthony Spatafore each contributing from beyond the arc to keep the scoring pressure on the Pioneers.
Despite Glenville State's attempts to close the gap with successful 3-pointers, the Falcons managed to sustain their lead. The game concluded with Fairmont State maintaining control, ending with an 88–75 lead over Glenville State.
Jolinder led the Falcons with 20 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed seven rebounds. Martinez matched Jolinder with 20 points, converting four shots from beyond the arc. Carter contributed 11 points and collected eight rebounds while also recording two steals.
Zycheus Dobbs finished with 10 points and dished out five assists.
Fairmont State hits the road to Sparkill, New York to face St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday, December 16. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
