FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The 13th-ranked Fairmont State University men's basketball team welcomed Point Park University to campus for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Despite trailing at the half, the Falcons were able to use a 44-point second half to claim the win, 72-61.
Andre Harris paced all scorers with 19 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
Tommy Williams chipped in another 14 points and was perfect from the line, making all six free throw attempts.
Fairmont State (21-4, 15-3) notched the opening four points including a three from
Tommy Williams. Both teams struggled to get anything going on the offensive end but after an and-one play by
Sam Emich, the Falcons were in front, 15-8.
With 8:09 left in the first half, Point Park (10-15, 4-14) erased the difference with eight-straight points to capture its first lead of the night, 18-17. The two sides started to go back-and-forth as the Falcons pushed ahead by four (26-22) with 3:30 remaining. The Pioneers responded with the next five points and by the end of half, held a one-point edge (29-28).
Just like in the first matchup of the two teams, Fairmont State came out firing in the second half. The team went on a 11-0 run for the opening four minutes as
Taj Thweatt scored nine of the points. Down 39-29, Point Park slowly chipped away at the deficit and made it a three-point game (43-40) with 11:11 left in the half.
The Falcons stretched the lead slightly the Pioneers did not shy away and managed to bring it back to just a couple of baskets as the hosts remained in front, 56-52 with 4:08 on the clock. FSU dropped in the next six points to garner a 62-52 advantage.
In the final two-plus minutes, both teams were in the double bonus as the game came down to free throws. The final 10 points for Fairmont State came from the free throw line as the team was 10-12 in the closing moments while the Pioneers were unable to narrow the margin. By the final horn, FSU held on for the 11-point win.Â
Fairmont State will head to Salem University on Saturday, February 22 for the final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
