Women's Basketball Overwhelm West Virginia Wesleyan

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The 22nd-ranked Fairmont State University women's basketball team hosted West Virgnia Wesleyan College in the final home game of the regular season. The Falcons avenged an early season to the Bobcats with a 75-46 win.

Leila Jones led the way for all scorers with 16 points as she went 6-7 from the field including 3-4 from behind the arc. Alyssa DeAngelo added 13 points as a total of 10 different Falcons found the score sheet.

From the jump ball, Fairmont State (23-4, 16-3) took control of the game with the opening 10 points. During the run, Leslie Huffman accounted for seven of the points. West Virginia Wesleyan (18-8, 12-7) battled back and cut the lead to five (12-7) with 5:26 on the clock. The Falcons regained control with a Leila Jones layup and a three from Alyssa DeAngelo but the Bobcats answered with five-straight points. Before the end of the first, Madeline Huffman hit a three to give FSU a 20-12 advantage.

Early in the second, the hosts hit two threes while the visitors responded with one of their own and a free throw. However, the Falcons overwhelmed the Bobcats with a 10-0 run to lead 36-16 with 3:45 left in the half. WVWC momentarily paused the run with a three before Fairmont State scored the next six points with four from Jalen Gibbs. The visitors made a field goal to close out the half as the Falcons led 42-21. In the second period, FSU outscored the Bobcats 22-9.

Out of the locker room, the maroon and white extended its lead by scoring nine-consecutive points to lead 51-21. From there, the team was able to cruise through the third and lead 65-31 going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.

In the fourth period, the Bobcats were able to outscore the Falcons, 15-10, but the damage had already been done as the hosts cruised to a 29-point victory. 

The Falcons shot nearly 51-percent from the field (29-57) while also making 11 threes. FSU also scored 29 points off 20 turnovers and added an additional 32 points in the paint.

Fairmont State wraps up the regular season on Saturday, March 1 at Frostburg State University. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
