FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team opened the home campaign against Lock Haven University. The Falcons fell to the Bald Eagles, 9-1.
The first inning was pretty quiet between the two teams as Fairmont State had a chance in the bottom of the second with runners on the corners but were unable to score the game's first run.Â
This pattern continued over the next inning until the top of the fourth when Lock Haven broke through. The visitors were able to score four runs (two unearned) on four hits and an error to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom half, the Falcons once again had runners in scoring position but were unable to bring them home. Just like in the fourth, the Bald Eagles took advantage of a missed opportunity by adding four more runs to their total in the fifth to now lead 8-0.
The score remained the unchanged until the top of the seventh when the visitors tacked on another run with a RBI double down the right field line. It took until the bottom of the eighth for FSU to get on the board when
Zach Brennan hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield as
Quintin Reep scored from third.
Ultimately, the Falcons were unable to score another run as they fell by the eight-run difference.
Quintin Smith finished the game going 3-4 from the plate while
Nick George pitched five innings in relief, allowing just one run (unearned) on four hits with nine strikeouts.
Fairmont State (2-2) returns to Dale Miller Field in Morgantown on Saturday, March 1 to face Lock Haven once more. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
