Falcons Walk It Off Twice Against Vulcans

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team welcomed California University of Pennsylvania. The Falcons were able to walk it off in both games against the Vulcans, 6-5 and 8-6.

Game 1: Fairmont State 6, California (Pa.) 5

California scored the games first runs in the top of the first with two sacrifice flies to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Emma Paul doubled down the left field line as Bella Hess was able to score. After a single and a walk, Alyssa McCormick singled up the middle to plate Paul and Elizabeth Waszkiewicz to take a 3-2 lead. Alexa Andrews expanded the lead for the Falcons with a two-RBI single to centerfield as they now led 5-2.

Fairmont State remained in front by the three-run difference until the top of the fourth when the Vulcans scored a run thanks to an RBI double. The visitors made it just a one-run game (5-4) after a sacrifice fly. 

The two teams were separated by one until the top of the seventh when California tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. In the bottom half, the Falcons were able to work the bases loaded with just one out. Sydney Emanuel pinch hit for FSU and delivered with an RBI single to left field to win the game, 6-5.

Caitlin Morey picked up the win as she pitched 3.2 innings in relief. Morey gave up just one run on a single hit while striking out five.

Game 2: Fairmont State 8, California (Pa.) 6

In the second game, the visitors once again took the early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. Waszkiewicz cut the deficit to one in the bottom half when whe reached on a fielder's choice as Brinna Hall scored.

Neither team was able to score additional runs until the top of the fifth when California doubled to left center before a single up the middle added another run. Trailing 4-1, Breonna Marietta doubled down the left field line to plate Carly Crowder for a 4-2 score going to the sixth.

The Vulcans notched another run in the sixth thanks to an RBI double ro right but in the bottom half, Abbie Keilholz tied the game with a three-run homer over the left center fence. As the game ventured to the seventh inning, the visitors were able to take the lead as they drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Down to their final three outs, Waszkiewicz got things started with a single before a sacrifice bunt by Jaylin McGill to advance her to second. After a fly ball, Andrews singled right up the middle as Waszkiewicz scored to even the score at six. The next at-bat, Grace Sobeck lifted a ball that carried over centerfield wall for the two-run homer and the win.

Andrews finished the game 3-4 with two runs and an RBI while Hall, Paul, Sobeck and Keilholz all finished with two hits.

Fairmont State (10-6) starts conference play on Saturday, March 15 against West Virginia Wesleyan College. Start time from Duvall-Rosier Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
